Shit that annoys you

Despite all the recent talk of budget cuts our local National Forest recently went ahead and re-paved one of the backcounty roads in our most highly trafficked rec area. This road was already a bit of a shit show on weekends with convoys of broverlanders and ADV moto riders treating it like the Baja 500 mixed with MTBers climbing up and gravel riders both directions. There used to be plentiful large pot holes and grade dips that kept the masses at bay. The paving project removed all the water bars and paved it smooth as can be. It is now drivable for all vehicles fast as your courage and lack of common sense will allow. Meanwhile its still a single lane mountain road with tight turns, limited sight lines and only occasional turnouts. And serious exposure if you screw up, not appropriate at all for large volumes of traffic. On a single drive I already encountered several passenger cars who were clueless about what to do when encountering oncoming traffic. In two cases I had right of way (uphill vehicle). Finally had to get out and explain it to one of them. Also saw RV trailers parked in a bunch of places. Again, completely inappropriate for this road and the increased traffic it will see. Good luck backing those up if needed. Cant wait for the wannabe moto gp and race car crowds to discover this road.

Tenant contacts me Saturday afternoon that the shower water will not turn off. I suggest he turn off the house water and I will stop by at 9am Sunday.
I take his shower handle apart to get to the cartridge/valve and determine it is fucked, go to Home Depot for a new one and the tool to pull the old one out.
The old one breaks in half trying to remove it (fuck, fuck,fuck) so now I have to pay a plumber to come out and remove the busted of piece.
I sure hope they are smart enough to use a tap to pull it out and not tell me I need to replace the entire brass diverter for $1,600. (Mad face)

eyeroll for the CNF repaving...SBNF also repaved the road to Childrens Forest, I get that it is probably money they have to spend or it goes away, but sure wish it was used for fuel reduction.

Obviously depends on brand, but shower cartridges I have done often come apart. Just drill in and pull it out, maybe :-). Hook and pick set can be helpful too.

I hate shower cartridges. Another thing that replaced near indestructible stuff that lasted forever. We still have an old delta six hundred in a shower and those couldn’t be beat

The good news is they got it out, repaired and out of there in 1.5 hours. How much will they bill me is the question.

Seriously. South Park got it right on that handyman episode. Every time I get the bill, it really does feel like the prices have gotten pretty nuts. Plumbers these days be like:

Seems to be the same with a lot of trades. I've been fumbling through some plumbing repairs because I don't want to have to call for help. The auto mechanic I used to go to charged $85/hr for a long time but cranked it up to $175 a couple years ago. Also changed for things like brakes to replace parts only rather than machine rotors, etc. He wanted $750 each to do front brakes and rear brakes. Last time I had them done on my previous truck I think I paid $400ish. I ended up doing the fronts myself. Rears were more complicated than I wanted to deal with so I found another shop who would machine them. They charged $450.

I got lucky and latched onto a super affordable and honest Latino mechanic about 16 years ago. He encourages me to bring my own parts and he loves cash. I never pay sales tax or card charges or any of that shit. Today he did a tranny fluid exchange, transfer case and rear diff fluid change, coolant flush, brake fluid flush, rear diff bushing carrier install, and HD Swaybar links with greasable ball joints for $280. Seemed pretty damned reasonable to me.

Ha, even with cost of gas I could drive cross country and your guy would be cheaper than what my previous mechanic quoted. I think he wanted $300 each to change T-case and rear diff fluid (I did those myself) and another $300 for trans fluid. Which I will also be doing myself. Don't recall if coolant or brake fluid were suggested yet. With the brake jobs and a couple other things he quoted over $3k of maintenance. He was never cheap before, but at least you knew he wasn't going to screw you over. When you see a quote like that and rates more than doubling in a short time, you start to wonder.

I use to have the best Volvo mechanic until he retired 18 months ago. His partner is clueless so I tried a new shop last service. Seemed pretty good, but further away and more expensive. I always thought Arnie kind of hooked me up because he loved my R.

When I finished residency and started making the big bucks in surgery my financial goal was to make enough per hour that it paid me to have a mechanic work on my car instead of doing it myself. It never happened.

Sounds like when Summit and Wasatch counties paved the east side of Guardsman pass. Massive increase in traffic.

10 or so years ago the Forest service rebuilt a trail from Ramona down to Cedar Creek falls in east SD county in response to a growing number of rescues. Up to that point there were mostly just braided social trails dropping 1,ooo ft down into the canyon. Soon as they rebuilt it the trail exploded on social media with touron hikers descending on it en masse along with idiots looking to party and cliff jump at the falls. The FS hadn't thought ahead to provide anywhere to park though so the neighborhood got overrun. After just a month or two and at least one cliff jumping death they closed the trail for a year until a new trailhead parking lot was built. It reopened with a permit system in place and caretaker living permanently on site to check them and make sure people had enough water and decent footwear. And a ban on alcohol and cliff jumping at the falls. They never seem to learn. I can't wait to read about some moron with a 30ft trailer getting stuck on Pine Creek Rd or better, losing the trailer off the side.

Had a campsite covered in trash this weekend in a beautiful setting. Group before me pulled up the fire ring and turned it upside down and burned a nee fire ring on live grass because there was so much trash in it. Instead of just cleaning up the trash. So I cleaned it all up.

Who the fuck does this shit? Such basic camping etiquette, dont burn three fucking chairs in the fire ring and leave them there!

That's beyond asshole.

Caught 6 mice in the last week. On the plus side I figured out the best place to put the trap.

Really, the people who moved the fire ring and cleaned up none of the mess kind of confuse me too. Like they were the “Overland” type with fancy little trailers and rtts. Wtf guys!?

in the future, If your willing to go a step further, take photo.s of the site prior to clean-up and provide them to the appropriate agency ;
in my experience Natural Resources Law officers are. 'a cut above' and take this sort of behavior ( very) seriously
( tearing out the fire ring is [ destruction of property] and particularly when it can be shown to be habitual behavior, may have real consequences.
in my region, this behavior would not be unexpected with METHamphetamine use, so I hope I would be cautious about approaching those engaged in such conduct.

Exiting freeway this afternoon I'm stopped at a red light in the turn lane. Opposing light turns yellow as a pack of cars approach the intersection. Didn't seem like the first ones would stop even as my light turned green. Sure enough they didn't. Meanwhile guy behind me is honking his horn at me wanting me to go. 4 more cars went thru the red after he began honking.

I had found a pretty nice fishing hole on a mountain stream that was guarded by an epic patch of devil’s club. Went up there this past weekend & someone had macheted their way through it directly to the spot…fucker

Liquid Soap taking over the world. Bar soap is basically extinct on the shelves and has to be ordered on Amazon. And does powdered laundry soap even exist anymore? I’m tired of paying for water weight and plastic waste

Bring back bar soap and laundry soap in a cardboard box, mutherfuckers
