Hows Sugarbowl ownership?
Suicide Six.
Ski Cooper.
Baker!!!
+1 for Wolf Creek, Ski Cooper, and A Basin
I’ve always loved A Basin but it’s time to renew my vows after their recent announcement to drop the epic pass.

Jay Peak...although I guess they don't technically have an owner right now

Glen Eden. Tiny, small-as-fuck hill but it's right at the edge of the Greater Toronto Area, which has a population of 6.5 million people. It doesn't snow very much, but they have an excellent snowmaking squad and even with seemingly an inch of base their groomers manage to push enough snow around to get everything open quickly and reliably with zero rocks/dirt showing.
Their bread-and-butter is their lesson program, and it's VERY busy. Props to them big time for keeping the sport alive, mainly by having a reliable, easily-accessed place for kids to learn how to ski and snowboard next to Canada's largest concentration of people. A LOT of transplanted easterners learned to ski here, and hopefully my kids grow up to be two more.
gleneden.on.ca - they make the best of what they got, and for the most part they do a great job.
Skibowl, or as we used to call it anarchy bowl. I was building a jump with a shovel on a blue one night a my sons ski team and the patrol stopped to help. Love that place.
I’ll add Brianhead...last year when taking the grommettes to ysl champs some guy at a gas pump was chatting me and the kids up, where you from, what age class, how’s school etc.
Turns out it was the owner....only knew because I saw him at the hill and came right over to ask the kids how they did. Solid.

For the last several years I've done an Ikon or Collective tour and some of my best days were the independents I stopped at.
Anthony Lakes, Pebble Creek, Lookout Pass, Whitewater, Silver Star
i think next year i will skip the pass and just ski the independent hills.
Ski Apache was fun. I hardly remember the terrain specifically but I was there 20 years ago. Great road trip with the wife to be (now STBEX). We drove from Austin and hiked and camped in Guadalupe Nat'l, drove up to Ruidoso using some forest roads and camped a night in the forest near town on a perfect night while the rest of our group, including the dude who's folks had a house up there showed up the next day.
We were up in those glades skiers right from the top of the gondola and someone had built a little kicker; patroller on a snowmachine comes over and tears it down with the track while we're all standing around it.
Funky little town. The road to the area is one way, up in the morning, down in the afternoon.
Who's been up there lately. C'mon, you can admit it! I never shopped real estate but I think someone mentioned Ruidoso in another thread about cool mountain towns that are still affordable. The mountain isn't all that but I bet the $$ of real estate reflects that. I guess its been 20 years, probably a bunch of rich texans buying houses for the lot and building mcmansions up there now. Maybe the rich texans fly to vail. Ruidoso is a driver. Also, far from everything except Roswell. Must be 6 hours to Taos. 4 to Santa Fe. I also remember several crappy casinos and one big nice one in a resort type hotel.
There might (should) be some mellow tours or some BC XC type stuff in the forest too but I never looked.

I'll second that.
The lifts spin, they have a regular shuttle bus to get people up to the hill, they are good to the school groups ... lots of positives and Michael the GM gives us the opportunity to work off our passes by improving the hill. There has been new terrain every year for the past 4 or 5 years, long season for a small hill etc. etc. etc. Like i said, tons of positives.
Hudson bay Mountain contracts out the food and beverage services so this isn't really their fault but the prices, quality, and service in the cafeteria, and bar / restaurant was awful. I am hoping they get rid of those guys.
I grew up in Ruidoso and still have a cabin and family there. It is one of the few actual mountain towns where you can still get a nice chunk of land and a cabin with views close to skiing for 50k. Ruidoso has a purely tourist based economy which makes it an interesting place to live. The skiing can be hit or miss some years but it is a four season town and is generally about as un-fucked with as anywhere you can go these days. I imagine it is a lot like CO mountain towns were many years ago.
Interesting how most of the ski hills being nominated for non-sh*tiness are small hills. Shames in Terrace get my nod as well as far as i can tell even though i don't spend a whole lot of time there.
What about Canuckistany hills? Any others make the list?
I’ve always enjoyed the community-owned hills even during low tide - Murray Ridge, Timothy, and WH2O way back in the day. There were always characters in the governing board that could be self important jerks, but by and large the hills were not too affected. I’ve also enjoyed skiing at Powderking, HBM, and Troll under their owners.
