I must confess, I fully support that kind of thing. :D
I do have a strava account I created solely for the purpose of flagging trails people are too dumb to leave unmapped. I may or may not have recorded a car ride or two to fuck with some roadie friends of mine. Guilty.
I certainly see the value in that heatmap for exactly the reasons everyone has mentioned here. Although it's not a full 100% population representation, it is a fantastic resource for looking at the level of usage of certain trail heads and trails. But dayum man, why do so many bikers need to race their internet buddies so badly that they jeopardize trails and the very image of the entire biking population? My area is insane with the stupidity. I look at some of the other communities where I know there are some areas that are off the radar for a reason. And all I see is a big blank spot on that map which is evident of something that should be so obvious........good judgement.
so much hate on strava. for road biking it's pretty fun if you have a bunch of buddies on it.
This was a pretty scary piece I read last year. Beware of Freds screaming down the hill.

I use the Strava for checking/tracking my roadie rides, it is interesting. The one thing I noticed, those days when you feel all strong and happy healthy, man I'm crushing the shit out of it vs those days when you're bloaty and crampy, hungover, why am I out here. The time difference is usually very little, which is both depressing and ok to see that eh, it doesn't matter just ride the piss out of the damn thing.
I live on a private road that dead ends past me. I noticed that holy shit somebody was putting HUGE speed in, then found out one of the Jelly Belly pros is staying with a neighbor. You think you're tough until you see their gorilla. Check Ned Overends Strava, dude is 58 years old...over 2000 miles YTD and over 150,000 feet of climbing. Dang.
you think you have KOM, pshhhhh
I AM STRAVA!!! :the_finge

Strava doesn't create asshats. Those people are like that regardless.
I use it on the road bike to keep track of stuff and to see where I stack up on climbs (poorly). I suspect most people do the same and use it responsibly but the bad apples ruin the barrel.
As a map nerd I love Strava, it helps me plan out new trail runs and see what the pros in the Peoples Republic are posting. However, I use Singletracks.com and or mtbproject to track my dirty rides.
It does bother me when some unitard tracks a mtb ride as a run and fucks up the segment stats. I *thoroughly* enjoy flagging their activities.
Strava is good also to track your progress against yourself. I'll never be pro, so I like to see where I am on segments vs last year at this time etc.
There are some dbags on there, but we will never get away from that. Dbags are everywhere.
Being able to sort the leaderboard by "my results" is really nice for telling me that I'm slow as shit compared to the same time last year
Where's that Vital MTB video of the Enduro dude who is cheating?
Apparently it's no secret that these Stravaholes who get KOM are cheating their fucking asses off. Cutting corners, switchbacks, turns, etc.
KidWOOOOHOOOO!!!

Why would anyone cut a corner when you've got digital EPO.
