Most streams look like mid summer including water temp. The best stream I fished drained a north facing basin. Thats the kind of water I’ll be looking for this season.

^ Well done mang! Love the big bug bite.
If you were leaving Denver for a three day fishing weekend this weekend, would you head to the Black canyon/gunni gorge? The rabbit? Elsewhere in the San Juans while they still have water?

Clear Creek, Blue River in Silvethorne, Deckers, Cheesman, Dream Stream, Pan, Taylor.
So many options!
Seriously, it's overwhelming. I get to fish most of those reasonably often, thinking I'll go down in the Black canyon for two nights. Anyone have an opinion on the best trail down for quality campsite/fishing access/minimizing poison ivy?

The upper trail is better.
Personally, I'd stick to tailwaters right now. Freestones are tough. Give me midges and mysis and 7X and I'm happy. That's real trout fishing. Dries are for pussies.
Went for a walk early this morning. I found what I was looking for.

Hey fellas, I'm back in JH so give me a yell if'n you wanna get up this way. I'd be psyched to connect with some of ya this summer. Low angle spare bedroom or choice back lawn camping.
Loving the carp stoke. I need to get out and catch a couple.
The fish were practically jumping into my hand today. Maybe it's me...or perhaps it's the bug caviar.

Say hello to my little friend, Mr. No-shoulders.
Attachment 238994
In here you walk slowly and carry a big stick. You use that stick like a blind man. Mr. No-shoulders is always close by...somewhere.
Wait til you see what they just did with the road. It is four times as wide as it used to be. Below the old hillside ramp/parking area, it is a full three lanes wide, all the way to the water. They put in a new ramp and dozered in the old one. They plowed over the campsite and most of the lower parking too. My jaw hit the ground when I saw it. For the life of me, I can't see why they put in this grand avenue to nowhere. You can drive an RV right down to the water...for now. They did a real shit job of it too; the whole damn thing is going to wash out and turn into a total fucking disaster the first time a gullywasher hits it.
Of course, the fancy new road takes you to the same old rattler and deer fly infested hell hole so...same old, same old. Once is enough for most anglers.
I will admit those things bother me down there. Haven’t walked it in a while after having an encounter scared the shit out of me.
Djongo- I’d be happy to fish with you sometime. Fairly booked until the end of the month. Feel free to pm and bug me.
Hell, I'll take the rattlers over the deer flies any day. Snakes just want to be left alone. The deer flies, on the other hand, will keep coming after your blood until you kill them. They bite like a motherfucker plus they are a known vector for tularemia. High water years like this one means relentless swarms of deer flies so vicious that 95% of anglers who encounter them will not come back again. In a drought year, you might get 4 or 5 hassling you while you fish. The flies hatch out of the root networks of flooded tall grass so a high water year with flooded flats will mean a constant swarm of 50-100 flies tormenting you all day long. I've been bit so many times that I developed an allergy to fly spit.
That's just how Great Basin rattlers are. They are very docile and rarely buzz until you get alarmingly close (within 5 ft). They'd prefer to slink away unseen to coiling up and going defensive posture. If you've only seen one in five years, then you aren't looking very hard. The slope above three island riffle is LOADED with them. I'd bet you'd passed within 5-10 feet of one numerous times over those years but never knew it. The one in my pic was lying about a foot off the trail and I got to about four feet from it before I spotted him. No warning until I poked him with my stick. You just about have to step on them to draw a strike but, as passive as Basin rattlers can be, it can be all too easy to get within stepping distance before you get buzzed. I actually stepped over a small one once. I tell everyone to walk at 1/4 of your normal speed and always keep your eyes glued to the ground. Never walk and fish because the fuckers are right there at the water's edge. When it comes to walking through rattler infested grass so tall you can't see your feet...well, the fishing had better be worth it is all I can say.
Um..yeah, if these were big ol' ornery Western Diamondbacks with a three foot strike range, I'd be a lot less cavalier about it.
