Ordered one this morning.
I've seen plenty of shitmobiles struggling to get up the pass with FWD on packed snow. Not saying you are one of those people, but the vast majority of people driving on HWY 2 are idiots. Add POW fever and they drive like retards. I've only seen people being ticketed after they are in the ditch or when they are stuck spinning their tires.
It was a couple years ago, and during the holiday timeline, but I have seen chain checkpoints on US2.
It's really funny here after growing up in MT. Nobody there owns chains unless they use their truck to plow roads or something. There might be chain restrictions there, but I've never heard of them. Usually a pass is just open or closed....and it has to be way worse than here before they close. I grew up driving FWD cars with shitty bald tires up and down from the mountains all the time. My first winter here (2008) I remember seeing someone chain up in my apartment parking lot with like 1/4" of snow on the ground and was just thinking to myself "What the fuck is this guy doing!?" haha
Now, AWD with winter tires and don't worry about it.
Yeah I was really put off by the ski commute when I first moved here, and my skiing really dropped off for a few years, but it's really not bad if the roads are decent. It's still too far for me to ski multiple days in a row on a regular basis though. Sure miss that 30 minute Bozeman to Bridger drive.
Stellar morning at the ridge

High 2 skied suprisingly well today. Wide open faces were mostly wind affected and there was a rain crust that was breakable in most cases. Some real nice and deep pockets from wind loading if you knew where to look. Trees didn't have the coral reefs I had anticipated and skied well all things considered. Or maybe it was the Billy Goats...they made today feel awesome.
Yeah, it was pretty nice. Worked until 0300 so didn't show up until 11. Beautiful snow, fast chalky groomers and deep soft crud and wind buff. Skied a bit with my friend Marco and his boy in the afternoon on Chair 4 and found some nice pow stashes in protected areas. Surprised the whole mountain is open but things are looking good.
Dipshits like this are reasons why chains are sometimes required when it's no longer storming

I hope he got a fat fine and a license suspension
On a different vein of dipshittery, only one party dared to venture on the open, convex face of Highlands Bowl @ Stevens today. Results were as expected when we witnessed them from the upper reaches of Big Chief B. It didn't rain up there, upside down wind slab on eggshells are "interesting"
Fly in tonight, and hope to ride lifts somewhere tomorrow. Any thoughts on conditions dweebus vs high 2 vs baker? Been trying to keep up on the conditions, but figured I'd ask you gents for the inside scoop. UW model seems to show more snow down south...
Come to white pass. I'll ski with you saturday
I found a few Boney lines at the Ridge yesterday morning around Chair 3
Just till Monday. My advisor is pressing me to get more research done, so I'm cutting the Christmas vacation short this year. I might ski Monday, too, depending on how much I feel like dealing with the crowds. Sounds like conditions are a bit variable with the recent warming, so I might just hit Stevens tomorrow since it's closest. If I had my head in the game, I'd bring touring gear and try to get up high (the Tatoosh looks like it might get some good snow tomorrow), but I don't think that's feasible at this point.
NW_Skier: Thanks for the offer, but I don't think it'll work out this trip.
Next time.
The quicker I finish up here, the quicker I get back to real seasons instead of 20 odd days here and there.
Good to know. Haven't skied Mission in a while. Maybe I'll do that on Monday in hopes it's a little less crowded than other places.
