That was fun. The kid has come a long way since the film he was in with plake.
No more smeary, slarvey turns at 9:30............
Impressive lines, but the style of a gaper to me.
Great short story and footage
No criticism of his steep jump turns. They looked pretty solid and functional on very steep terrain. In the powder pillows segment however Kye was regularly over-rotating, windmilling his his arms to regain balance, and getting caught in the back seat. It's a wild bull riding style, which many people may appreciate, but I much prefer to ski (certainly not claiming to charge like Kye) and watch others ski with a more conventional composed style. Compare to skiers with a solid technical skiing background, such as Hoji or Max Hammer.
Yeah, I get it. It did look weird in the pillows, kind of not turning his skis. I didn't pay much attention to that segment, kind of boring.
Otoh, glad to see that he wss using jump turns in the couloir, because a lot of people say that jump turns are obsolete.
I use them.
16 minutes long and worth every minute IMO. That pitch in the middle segment was crazy steep.
Calling bullshit on the "gaper style" comment. Watch Hoji ski pillow lines like that. He often over-rotates a bit too - on purpose - to control speed. I'd like to see anyone get through some of those without a little window rolling.
Yeah, def wild bull, loosey goosey park skier style. Initiating turns way late and with his upper body. No doubt he's never been a racer, but still fun to watch and can charge. Just never really looks in control and on top of it (way different from Hoji, TahoeJ). But he's young and has plenty of time to grow.
^^ I didn't say his style was anything like Hoji's, just that some over-rotation in steep pillow lines is pretty common regardless of style.
This thread has shitty style.
Anybody that the pillow segment was boring can choke on a bag of asparagus
fuckin eh that was rad! absolutely phenomenal and for the haters compare kye's descents to Matty Richard and Johnny Foon and I think kye looks more composed and skis with more control and style. not saying that richard or Chilton are hacks, but it was apparent to me that kye is just slightly on a higher plane.
The pillow segment was great and I thought it very fun to watch, he throws way more spins off pillows than say hoji or max hammer, maybe more like abma with his style. but whatever, they are all aesthetically pleasing to watch and anyone who says otherwise is a complete hater/douche. Plus that pov footage in the couloir is amazing, so fluid and smooth, kye skis that shit with precision.
definitely one of the best free ski porns i've seen this year!
This was a really good video. Being a bit of a ski snob for form and technique and reading the comments first, I thought I might not like it. Wrong, this is really good.
I think plenty of the younger guys make kind of ugly turns having never used skinny skis growing up, but this is hardly the video to use to point that out. Kye is the full package from jumps to steeps. And this is very worth watching.
Been a while since I have seen a pro callout on the board and thought it was funny. kootenayskier gets after it and proops to him for calling how he saw it.
Another thing snowboarders taught us is that there are so many ways to style through snow and gravity.
Kye definitely deserves first billing. Thought it was amazing.
Kye and Candide should do an edit together so TGR can really get down to business on critiquing their styles.
Gorilla Stance vs. Flailing Windmill. Epic throwdown. 2016.
