Thanks! Ikon pass has me scheming and dreaming with the unlimited Mammoth days. Just have to wait for the kids to get out of school.

Just moved into a new house in Old Mammoth area and last night was one of the windiest nights I can remember. Sleepless night of house shaking wind and thoughts of trees coming down on the house. Heavy wind effected snow and no sleep, I guess I will sit today out.
wow this weekend was good. awesome storm skiing off chair 12 sat, every inch of a 2 foot pow day on sunday with blower in the trees off chair 22 in the morning and prime windbuff off 5 in the afternoon.
damn.
Not exactly blower pow. Closer to maritime pow but still very deep. Thighs we're burning by lunch. Trees under 8 was the spot Sunday afternoon.

Mostly Sierra cement, but sweet where it was buffed. Avi 3 was exception.
Had 30ish feet of a 90ish foot tree co.e down last. Right where my car was parked a couple hours earlier. Glad I decide to move. Blocked most of Horseshoe until the plows came along. Heard a crash in the night and thought it was a massive roof shed. We had a wee bit o wind last night

Tail Time!
Drove down early yesterday morning and skied til closing. Mondays winds and warmer air made for some thick, crusty snow in spots. It skied much better when it was untracked, then it got a bit funky.
Attachment 263527
Face of five just after opening.
Attachment 263530
Got to the top of Five and waited, hoping the closure off the back towards nine would open. Daves untracked.
Attachment 263533
That's where I want to head to.
Attachment 263540
As soon as patrol pulled the closure, I hauled as for the tail. After a sketchy traverse out, I was all by myself. Should I go here?
Attachment 263542
1st run
Attachment 263543
Looking back up my line. Thick pow, but way less wind affect.
Attachment 263544
Ride back up ch 9. Going right back to the tail.
Attachment 263545
Passed by "Field of Dreams" totally untracked.
Attachment 263547
2nd run. Still haven't seen anyone else out there.
Attachment 263548
Jumped on ch 9 and as I got off the Top had just opened.
Attachment 263550
This time I headed all the way out to the end and skied just to the left of "Old Faithful".
Attachment 263551
At the bottom of my line I cut right and got a shot looking up at "Old Faithful". Nice.
Did one more lap on the tail after that and then headed for the top. Got four fresh laps on the tail, never crossed a track or saw anyone else. Kind of a mixed bag up high, parts of it were good and parts were super chunked out. Winds built thru the afternoon and Daves got good right before closing.
Nice shots ESS!
Did you get a look at the noids? I'm wondering if they slid. I'm hoping this storm really sets the base up. I'm heading up Thursday morning for four days.
Glad you got the tail good, I stuck to the other side of the mountain, Climax, P4, Hemlocks, and although it was fun it wasn't amazing. Skied like 4 inches, but fast and smooth. The noids well at least P4 pretty much fully slid. Snowing again this morning :)
ESS - great shots, and thanks for posting!
Should be on the hill by noon Friday through Monday...drop a note if still down.
Sounds good. I'll be skiing solo as my bro's are working, so if you get out hit me up. I ski out of CL and usually lap 23 or gondola then finish on 22 late in the day. My plan is to ski all day Friday and head back to Reno that night as the crowds roll in. Decent little storm rolled thru yesterday and I'm guessing 10" to a foot of new snow today with clearing skies. I'll post some pics this evening.
Attachment 263729
Sun is out as yesterday’s storm left 1ft+ over the upper Mtn. Snow was lighter and less wind effected than the past couple days. Great runs again in the tail first thing in the morning.
Attachment 263733
Fun factor was high this morning.
Overcast skies and tired legs are combining for a later start today. Couple more pics from yesterday and then I'm out the door.
Attachment 263884
Hangers opened yesterday for about 5 hrs. Did one lap thru it. Super narrow and boney in the throat. This was late in the day after it closed due to excessive slide slipping. Zoom in and the rock reef in the throat is clearly visible. Decent turns after the choke.
Attachment 263885
Looking West off the top Mammoth late in the day. Never get tired of this view.

If you're like me and find yourself frequently on the top of a mountain wondering what your looking at in the distance here's a great web sight,
http://www.heywhatsthat.com/
Go to the "new panorma" tab and it lets you put yourself anywhere and shades everything that you can see in red. This is a screen shot from the top of Mammoth and what you can see along with the distance. Check it out.
A few more random pics from around the Mtn yesterday (Friday) that capped off an excellent week of skiing.

Overcast skies & tired legs combined for a later start time . Powder bowl early in the afternoon.
Attachment 264083
Gravy chute with decent coverage and flat light.
Attachment 264084
Upper mtn view from the back of ch 1.
Attachment 264085
Light started to get better in the afternoon, with Cornice getting a thin sliver of sunlight on the skiers left side.
Attachment 264093
Spun some laps off 23. Snow was ok, kind of in that in between phase of skied out but chunked up. Needs wind or more skier traffic. Coverage in the Wipeouts is much improved from the low tide conditions just last week.
Attachment 264088
It went blue late in the afternoon so I headed over to 22 for the last hour of the day. Chair line of 22/Viva with good cover and fun winter snow on it. Pick your line for the next pow day.
Attachment 264089
Avi chutes were skiing well with less chunk & funk than the top. Top entrance into avi 2 is deceiving, looks ok from above, it's a rock filled mine field. If you have any regard for your skis, don't do it.
Attachment 264090
Take the alternate entrance. Take two turns into Avi 1, then go hard left. Look for this traverse track. Take your time and you can ski right into Avi 2 with no worries.
Attachment 264091
In Avi 2, looking down & ready to ski. Got the whole thing to my self. It skied well top to bottom. No rocks in the throat.
Attachment 264086
Looking into Avi 1 from the chair. The entrance into it is much easier than AV 2, what isn't visible from above is the rocks thru the choke. The snow in it was sweet.
Attachment 264092
Looking back up Avi 1. Just before the throat check your speed and watch for a few rocks. Once your thru, it's all good. Again, no one else in sight and I never saw anyone else in it while I was there.
Attachment 264094
Last run, Canyon trees still holding a few fresh turns at 4:00 p.m.
Attachment 264096
Liking this! Packed up, got a fish burrito from Salsa's and got on the road. Made it to Carson City on fumes & found the the price of gas had dropped 6 cents in the last 5 days. Very nice. Forecast is looking promising next week. Call in sick, make an appointment with Doctor White, go skiing.
Damn, it is dumping this week. I wonder if the top opens by Saturday and where will the extreme winds blow all the snow to? To bad I am blacked out for a weekend trip.
Attachment 264669
Skied til closing yesterday (Wednesday) as the latest storm dropped 1-2 ft new snow and brought with it big winds. Lifts were stop and go all day long with some closing, re opening, then closing again. Lincoln Mtn was tracked out by 10:00 a.m. even though Ch 22 never opened. An army of skiers/boarders hiked from Gold Rush and ch 25 and hit everything. Heard an estimate that 500 people did the hike. Insane. Lot more people here than during last weeks storm cycle, but by the end of the day the hill was empty. Got a few pics, but not any good ski ones.
Attachment 265039
Cool cloud on the drive down yesterday morning.
Attachment 265037
Climax thru the clouds early in the day.
Attachment 265038
Last run was in the Blue Jay trees. CL looking empty at 4:15 p.m.
Attachment 265045
Not stoked when I got inside at the end of the day and realized the tip of my Salomon Q-115's was delaminating. Sucks to lose your pow ski in the middle of the storm cycle.
Attachment 265044
Came out of Canyon and it was dumping.
Attachment 265042
Later, walking out from the Looney Bean, still snowing.
Attachment 265040
Vons parking lot after late night food run in case the blizzard hits.
I don't think the "Blizzard" was that major of an event. Heard some thunder/lightning early this morning. Headed up to CL to see what it's like.

The chairs marked are the only things open as of 10:30 a.m. Playing the waiting game. Nothing by noon, I go to June. Rhymes.
Holy Shit! I can't believe they got the top opened today. Looking forward to some great pics from ESS.
Surprising lack of avy action allowed them to get the top open before noon today. Pretty much everything was wind packed except Dragon’s Tail and Hemlocks; the latter was by far the best snow I found today.

[QUOTE=Rob D!;5564375]How did the afternoon work out? Did you go to June? Is anything open there? Thanks for the updates!
Hey. Didn’t get to June. Stuck it out yesterday and skied the lower Mtn. Lots of tree runs, as the snow was slightly less wind affected.
Everything opened today within a few hours. Snow was the same thick, wind packed powder we’ve seen all week. It was the groomed that got really funky this afternoon. It got warm, snow got skied on and really packed down hard. By late afternoon the snow was rippled all over the Mtn. No place to rest your legs. I’ll post some pics later.
PS-People are pouring into town.
Looks like a little refresher Sunday evening. I'm heading up Sunday to ski Monday and Tuesday.
