Worse. It's in Texas.

marfa's art. and it started with one artist a while ago. one big driver for artists is it has to be a cheap place to live because art doesn't pay.
hipsters are something different altogether - call them flaneurs in flannel.
I was almost willing to live under this to get affordable housing and away from Q5's, drivers yapping on phone, with mtn bikes on roof from tailgating me....

I don't think Butte will ever get truly clean and that the pit will also hamper its economy. Anaconda and East Helena seem to have a chance. It's really sad too because I honestly feel Butte would be the best place to live in Montana if it weren't literally toxic.
There is a real estate group doing some historic building development in Butte. They've done a few buildings including that little grocery store Uptown.
As far as real estate, I've always felt that Billings has a stronger economy, brighter future, and is still pretty cheap. Honestly, Livingston is fairly cheap for as close to Bozeman as it is. But as long as the pass is there, it'll probably stay that way.
Its all relative but I think the Livingston is fairly cheap boat left at least 5yrs ago. I kinda wish I would've pulled the trigger but phillipsburg should be alright. Funny thing is I was talking to someone from livingston and they had been looking for a place in clyde park...
wonder if this guy has any rental properties in Butte....lol....doubt it....
interesting what a hole in the ground in montana can buy...be interesting to see one of those boats in that pond...

There was a wave of about 8-10 really decent fixer uppers that sold in Livingston around October. Good prices that all got snatched up in 2 or 3 days max. Fucking kicked myself for not having any money when they hit the market. Hoping maybe in the spring a couple gems pop up again.
Oh, well this explains that.
I was scrolling back to see how much of this I've read, think I've read most of it. I was just going to offer that Bourdain did a Montana episode. Not going to give much new info to locals, but it did to me and entertaining either way.
GF and I just drove to Bozeman to pick up a rooftop camper for the Tacoma tomorrow, and then start heading south to see the Tetons. (We did the Yellowstone loop last Summer in a rental car.) Any recommendations for scenic camping spots between Bozeman and Jackson? 4WD Taco (stock with rear locker), so we're not afraid of getting off the beaten path a bit.
I'd go through red lodge and Beartooth pass
1000 Oaks - If you go through the park, 2 road sections are closed right meow.
On the east side of the loops, Roosevelt/Tower to Canyon and Canyon to Fishing bridge.
If you go the beartooth route, consider that.
If you wanna hang in JH, you're welcome here at the House of 420. Backyard camping is cushy.
Thanks for the invite and info guys. One of the gents at GFC suggested Sheep Creek Rd area (given the busy weekend) east of the Tetons, and his photos looked amazing.
Several recommended Beartooth, so it's on. Thinking we'll try to find a camp spot an hour or so past Red Lodge to cut down the drive from there to Sheep Creek tomorrow.

Well hell, that's a sweet spot fo sho. Could be busy
Holla if ya wanna connect, have a brew or a safety sesh. Some mags will be out at Teton village tomorrow too, BabyBear and rideit me thinks.
So we found a fantastic camping spot just West of Beartooth pass, and didn't roll out until noon. Traffic was pretty bad in the park, including a 30 minute wait for ONE damn buffalo next to the road, and an HOUR wait for people stopping for elk across the river....
Anyhow, we were almost to Old Faithful when they closed the road due to smoke from the Lone Star fire flaring up, and are now headed South from Island Park headed for Grassy Lake Rd to cut back over to the Tetons. We'll probably just find a camping spot there and continue in the morning. The adventure continues!

Just rolling into Jackson, anyone in town for a late lunch? This poor vis due to smoke is a bummer.
Thought this would be the best place to put this as the Berkeley Pit was discussed in this thread...anyone see this video about shooting birds in Butte that was made in November?
https://youtu.be/qtlPTE-UmY4
Back in about 2000 the Berkley Pit contacted me about buying an avalauncher to shoot at the pit walls to scare off the birds. They went another direction after I explained the downsides of the proposal.
That video is great for when people talk about responsible mining in Montana.
More like when you have raped and pillaged a place and ruined the shit out of it. What are all the ways to get out of having to deal with the mess you made and in some cases a mess like the Berkley Pit that has no remediation possible.
Yeah, we need copper and aluminum and other metals and minerals but the companies that reap the rewards should pay for the costs as well.
Off my soapbox now.
