I was very lucky to see her when she was introduced to the world by Gram Parsons on a tour he did in, I think, 1971. She was 20 or so. Rutgers student center, 2 bucks.

Emmylou was hot then, and got even hotter over the next 20 years IMHO.

Yeah, but check her rocking out in mom jeans:

I've been in love with her forever though since I saw her at the Palomino in LA back in the mid-70s.
Well no shit - it's a publicity photo after all - but she actually did look like that in person in the early 90's when I got to meet her.
Let's just say that if my wife looks that good at 50+ then I'll be OK with it.
I'm with Tipp. And even at 66, she's looking pretty good for her age.

OK, well, that's more like it. Although she could use a little work........
Another current guy that reflects old school country is Hayes Carll. Gotta check out "She left me for Jesus" as its one of the best country songs ever. Growing up in the 70's my dad was big into country. I always liked the "funnier" artists like Bobby Bare and Jimmy Reid. She left me for Jesus is right up with Bobby's Drop kick me Jesus for awesome country songs.
Just got "Texas Troubadour," the Townes van Zandt box set. Superb and highly recommended:

Truly a fantastic songwriter, one of the best.
Wow, that is $26 for the equivalent of 8 albums! Even though I own some of them already, I'm tempted. TVZ is awesome.
I know a lot of people feel like this is "alt" country. You listen to this and to me this is nothing but country. I would argue true country has always been a little alternative.

Oh and "if that ain't country i'll kiss your"
Cross Canadian Ragweed
Trent Willmon
Coming from someone who really doesn't hit up much country on the rotation or in the catalog in general in the last 30 years, Kacey Musgraves really represents the next generation of real true country music.

60+ posts and no mention of Ryan Bingham. For shame. Great sound, lyrics, and backstory. Do yourself a favor and check him out.
Both Chris Knight and The Dirty River Boys are worth a listen as well.
Cross Canadian Ragweed!!!
I saw Ryan Bingham open for MMJ, Wilco, and Dylan this summer. He didn't blow anyone away but he certainly earned the respect of the crowd by the end of his set. I need to check out more.
Listened to some Cross Canadian Ragweed. It sounds like country radio (which I hate).
Most of the artist being listed are "alt country" or some other derivative it seems. I love GP both most of the music he recorded was covering other artists, he was mostly responsible for introducing hippies to country music.
For real country try and find pre 70s music, Haggard, Owens, Travis, Martin, Acuff/Rose, Williams, Cline, Young, Lynn, Jones, Carter Family etc, etc.
This music is great and what all modern country and alt country is derived from. A good place to start and get a feel for this music is the NGDB's Circle album, read the liner notes and google the artists that sit in and the songwriters of the tracks.
Thanks again guys, this has been great. Really digging some of the stuff I'm getting from here. Probably going to do another CD order soon, psyched!
