Just saw a post on Facebook that said Sonora Pass is scheduled to open tomorrow, Friday, April 18th.
Stars are in alignment....
Yep - just off the phone. Confirmed 108 opening noon Friday.
what is a good time to start hiking?
Probably when you get there. Gate opens at noon, so not ideal timing. Not freezing, so earlier will be better this weekend.

Planning on getting to the pass Sat morning, possibly solo as 1 person already bailed and my brother is leaning towards no as well. May just walk around No-name rather than go back towards Leavitt if that ends up being the case. Interested to see what the coverage is like this year.
Not going to make it up today. Touring with my 7 year old Sat, but I might break away for a No Name lap. CaliKid look for my pop-up near the pass maybe we can do a lap.
Anyone headed to Sonora tomorrow? I'd like to get a Y car lap in. (Will most likely do a solstice-powerhouse combo on sun with dhelihiker.)
Sonora Pass was fun today. Heard it was pretty stiff up high on Leavitt. Young Owen skinned up into the bowl on No Name. He and I hung down lower while mama did a lap off the top. Tired kid. Pics later.
That wasn't any of you guys off the road upside down in Deadman crick this morning was it?
Not us....I jumped the thing.
There were two guys out there today decked in touring gear. My guess it was one of them.
Hiked to the Y today. Only 5 people down the proper Y. Only one guy in each of the chutes that surround the Y. It was pretty firm up there today with a few winter turns up top. We were the last people up there and it was full on sloppy mank heading back to the turn at deadmans creek. Highlight for me was finding a skinny long chute down the peak just lookers right of Leavitt.
Any beta on the names of all the couloirs out there?
T'was a car down in the crick. Looked scary. 2 ambulances, 2 fire trucks, Mono County Sheriff, CHP..
I did see a bunch of emergency vehicles going south on 395 at around 4pm
Think those people were ok who wrecked the car. Saw some of them standing around as I walked back to my truck. Took me forever to get picked up. Hell, even a couple Outbacks and Foresters passed me. Must've been the snowboard :) Interesting to hear the Y never softened, I thought I'd blown it by motoing this morning and not waiting up top a while. Firm, but smooth in the steeps.
Oh, and to the person who "FKNA'd" my truck, made me smile, thanks. Hope some fun was had.
That was me.
We went after you obviously...it was firm at noon but first couple of turns had winter snow. I'd imagine it got softer later in the day as everything else was deep corn on the exit to the creek around 2-2:30pm
Here's the line I skied today...its the hidden chute on the lookers left that has the snow apron on top where you can sort of make out my traverse mark. You cannot see the chute at all in this photo. After a ton of down climbing on the cliffs on this face to get a better look, I determined that the chute went. It got to around 190cm width (my ski length) at one point and the exit was a straightline to the open slope below. It was pretty rad. Is there a name? I would think it has been skied before on bigger years since its just across Levitt heading down to the creek drainage.

Two weeks ago it was epic.

I think I ran into your group at the top of Leavitt, assuming you were the 3 who then booted back up after skiing the Y the first time and were talking about finding that hidden couloir. I was the solo guy who went in the alternative entrance to the Y from the top after your crew.
Good times, best snow I had was in the upper bowl off of No-Name.
FKNA the Pass opened
