Call it whatever you want, as long as you contribute I'll go along. Let me know when it's done, I love roosting loam.
I still like *Craft Trails*.
Rode kingdom trails today. Super rad, and not overrated from my minimal experience.
Thinking I should take time off work tomorrow and get out locally. VT riding so different from what I'm used to

This corner would do well with a berm. It's fairly fast already on loose loam. There is a natural jump behind me into a downhill and then this corner to swing around and back up. Just beyond the turn is wet. This trail will be fun when done, although I'm finding a lot of surface roots already.
I cannot believe how long I've gone without a Mcleod. Great tool.
That was always a county park but after we got the network pretty nicely built out they brought in a trails coordinator for the county parks system and that's when it got dialed in and marked. They use markers tacked to the trees made of reflective material they cut at the highway dept stuck on metal disks. It's easy to follow the trails and makes for killer night riding because your helmet light seems to find the markers pretty easily even when the leaves get deep in the fall. This is one of the very few places it's legal to ride at night in the entire area so during hunting season it's a great place to be. I really love this spot even though it's one of the toughest places I've ever ridden. It absolutely beats me silly every time I go but I keep coming back for more.
Unfortunately these places got nearly destroyed when 2 tornadoes ripped through in May. It's still choked with hundreds of trees down, the state land at the top (the second map) is just as devastated. Nobody I know has gotten very far in since so we don't really have any idea how bad it is other than what a couple of hikers have told us.
Rogue Hoe is the next evolution unless you're working with just dirt. The rogue blurs the line between a Mcleod and a Pulaski. You don't need to switch tools to take medium roots, or try and work around them with the Mcleod until you get tired of it and go grab the pulaski. The rogue is heavy, but keeping your elbows in and letting the tool work makes it not too bad. When you hoist it for a big chop bring it close to the body. For pure tamping a Mcleod still rules. A pulaski, claw hammer, handsaw, rake, and rogue with a 5 gallon bucket with a short shovel is a complete kit for hand building in most situations IMO.
On the berm, just leave it a flat loamy turn. It'll be fun to rip it apart for a few months. When the tires finally denude the organic, then build your berm. Let the tires do the work. Move downstream and keep opening up trail. Come back for a quick project when the loam is gone. Labor is too precious and roosting loam is fun AF.

Yeah, I could see that being an extremely useful tool.
That is my plan. I always ride the trails in and then hope to add a berm later when the line is defined. I say 'hope' because I hardly ever go back and do it. It's a lot of work to find good dirt sometimes.
Rode the stratham alps last night. Roots were a bit slick, but the dirt was tacky. Mud was not too bad in the typical wet spots. Last Oct during their work day they added some berms and a couple of those have been ridden in nicely. I'm still not a huge fan of their newer trails though. They basically made Z style skinning switch backs. Idk, old school cc race trail or something. They really could have made them much more fun imo. I want to get involved there a little bit, but I have so much other rogue stuff going on and it's only a committee of one, me...no bs politics.
It's a real shame when a lot of work goes into trail with lay-out issues. Kimmers was like that up in Stowe. Some of the newer stuff in Richmond also. Tons of speed, then overtight turn with no grade reversal. It will not age well. As a rule for myself, less steep and as open and straight as possible ends up making fun trail, although now that I have been working on the most out-lying sections of the trails here I am going steeper because I miss those steep old school lines and the distance from the access point is a good filter.
+1000 on the bullshit politics. MTB in VT that shit is OUT OF CONTROL!

55HR for me.
Got geared up and ready to ride, walked out and ... it's raining :( I haven't been out in a while to give my busted up hand a chance to heal and don't really want to risk going down on wet leaves/roots/rocks and wrecking it again.

It's sooooooo soggy here :( I've had it, gonna travel to ride next week. I have two new bikes that will be here and will need to get out and be exercised.
Trails held up nicely after last week's rain. Damp and overcast skies does make for stunning riding conditions and kept the trails empty. Gotta get those miles in before trails start closing down next month.

Ended up being able to ride catamount, kingdom trails x2, and cady hill during my time in VT (and the causeway but not sure that counts). Trails are so fun here, pretty different from SLC, and the dirt was consistently ripping. Can't wait to get back next summer to check more spots
