That’s nuts
Is it crazy to buy an old Volvo like a 2003 XC70 with 160k? Don't have vin. Seems like their mpg can be meh, especially if you don't spring for premium but I know nothing else about Volvos. There's isn't actually a Volvo dealership here either.
I mist be crazy. Maybe 125k or under, but 160k seems high.
The thing is if someone has a 50 mile commute they're doing 20k/yr just commuting so you hope that's mostly easy highway miles and then 160k doesn't seem too bad. It really depends on usage patterns and maintenance. As was said be prepared to keep up with that maintenance otherwise a Volvo will bite you in the a$$.
So we had 2 XC70's, and we're on our 6th Volvo (current 2013 XC60 T6).. My lowdown on the XC70 of that year - built like a tank, kinda drives like one, but will go through anything. XC70's of that era eat front end suspensions but it's not a hard DIY to change out the control arms, ball joints and links. It's easy to test if the front end is shot when you're kicking the tires.
The transmissions are a known weak spot - by '03 they were supposedly getting their shit together, but make sure it gets warm on the test drive to see if its slipping. Hard shifts are supposed to be an easy fix. even though it's "lifetime fluid", get it changed. Records of fluid changes are a big plus.
Records for any work is good. Volvos last forever but they need maintenance to do that. Deferred maintenance on a Volvo is a big hairy bitch that can chew up your free time and money.
I think early XC70s are great first cars for teenagers and in town grocery getters.
You should be able to buy that car pretty cheap. The milage doesn’t scare me, but you want to factor in expensive belts and suspension. Our transimission lost its awd capability which apparently is common. Luckily someone else totaled it and we got a payout for much more than what we could have sold it for. Mpg was low 20s as I recall. Not bad considering awd and size
Hm, not really good at working on cars myself. Anything that can't be added or removed with a few turns of a few bolts is gonna be a problem. Doing suspension work in the middle of winter doesn't sound fun.
To toss another log on the fire:
We loved our 2011 XC70 T6. 300hp, 300 torques, and built like a tank with equally appropriate cargo space.
I would never be worried about an old Volvo as I've personally seen many in the family go 200+. Routine maintenance is your friend as others have stated.
The AWD issue was peak with those early aughts models though so addressing that would be my only advice.
I think you'll be ok.

Yeah it's not, no heated dentist's garage here at the homestead. If you're not into working on cars and I can't really blame ya, look for a third gen CR-V. Not very exciting, but that car will live forever if you change the oil when needed, and go just about anywhere you want to go. Great value for the $$.
Japanese cars and "value for the money" don't really go together, but it's what I'm looking at anyway because of reliability and quality. Just hard when you're marginally self employed and it's your slow season and you owe taxes and your dentist's kids aren't putting themselves through preschool, ya know?
But hey, lots of time to ski!

2004 Lexus RX 330 AWD. 145k. Bad ass or pass? Should I put a box up there with that tailgate spoiler? Will that put me in GPM territory instead of MPG?
Not a huge SUV guy, but hey, it's a Lexus.
Just a thought.

Bobby, is this you?
Fight the system man
Good to hear, but not sold on 18mpg. Ugh. That's quite the downgrade for me, and I didn't think I'd had that far to go.
