I’m just glad when they don’t call me creep.

Several years ago a Quebec couple skied over the back side at Kicking Horse into the valley behind the resort. Wife died as they initially tried to climb out, then wandered for several days. They never stayed in one place long enough for the helicopters to find them. Didn’t know the area, terrain, made terrible decisions.
when asked what he would do differently, the husband said he’d have taken his cell phone with him or some such....cell phones don’t work in the back country....goober.
The article published in Ski Canada a few months later was among the worst journalism I have ever read.
Cell phone GPS can’t be trusted out of cell range. When travelling hwy 93 between Storm Mountain and Radium, and my vehicle is using Apple iCar, it takes the maps from my cell phone. It does not track the highway as it does when I use the vehicle GPS. If I require GPS in remote areas,I turn of iCar functionality.
So much stupidity in this world. So little ability to avoid it....

I remember that, I was living in Golden when it happened.
GPS works fine outside of cell range (on iPhones anyway, perhaps with a longer delay to accuracy). And there are some limitations to be aware of, but if this guy was using his long enough to drain his battery, it’s reasonable to assume that he was getting an accurate reading of his location and the bulk of his previous track. I’m guessing that he was relying on a user-friendly/ dumb “go this way” arrow that either wasn’t set to a correct destination, or wasn’t working as expected. Also, given that he was able to get out a phone call, maybe he could have provided GPS coordinates to rescuers?
And 80 years old + depending on tech = bad idea.
Trying out your new gps in a blizzard--another bad idea.
For that matter--certified guide + blizzard + cell phone navigation = 7 dead in the alps

Wait, is old goat Hemingway?
20” day at Alta on Sunday. Riding Supreme with my buddy and two older guys from Indiana. The last time either of them had skied outside Indiana was 23 years ago and they’re both on sub 80 mm ancient skis.
We get over the last pitch on the lift and the view opens up. The one guy turns to his buddy and says “Cool, we can go off the backside from here”. We talked them out of it.
Didn't get a picture, but nothing screams Gaper More than a grown man coming down to breakfast at the Inn wearing a hat with goggles on the forehead. Extra points for the Extreme Snowboarding t-shirt.
Back in my room/bag/car... when im coming downstairs to eat breakfast. Sounds like guy was in normal "just woke up" clothes and had moseyed down the stairs from his room for breakfast, but just to make sure he and everyone knew what he was there for, he made sure to wear his Extreme Snowboarding T-shirt, with a beanie and goggles.
I bet he stomped a sweet imaginary pillow line down those stairs though (as a full grown man i still do this sometimes too. Its fun. sue me.).
Ha. One time at JH I was taking my last piss at the Mangy Moose after midnight, and some kid clomps up to the urinal next to me still in his boots, with a, yo, dude.
Lee Trevino tells a story a lot about how he woke up in his spikes on a Sunday during a tourney. One of them was when he won a major.
