Really, Don't see it sticking.
Do these "Late" shows even get watched anymore?
and $$$$$$$ can make a lot of things stick
Wow.
They did actually find a replacement as unfunny as Letterman.
Good move. And, it's not about watching late night anymore, even on the DVR. Kimmel and Fallon are doing a lot on YouTube. I don't watch that shit anymore, though. Except for Jon Stewart.
I would really really miss the Colbert Report. If you don't think he's funny, it's because you're a terrible person and you hate America.
Brody Bruce from mall rats ought to host
I'm trying to imagine why anyone would think this guy isn't funny...can't come up with anything.
Too stupid to get it? Tea partier?
Late night with Colbert? Isn't that already a show(that I don't watch cause I dumped the Sat)?
Colbert is funny, but I think what makes him funny is that his 'character' is supposed to be a dumbass republitard.
What will happen when he has to drop the act? I guess he can still be funny, but we'll have to see.
I love Colbert. But not a good fit for that gig...
He will be doing the show without the "Colbert report" character. Which I think is sort of hard to imagine for people that have watched him for the last 10 years or more. It will be interesting to see what thats like and if its good or not.
Have to hope for different sort of late night show with Colbert. I just can't see his demographic sticking around when he's interviewing blonde-sitcom-actress number 125 about her new movie. That shit gets old fast.
I think the whole world is excited to see what project Paul Schaffer tackles next.
Colbert is funny and quick witted every time I have seen him out of the ( repor) character. He will do great. The only downside is I will miss his old show.
He's going to be really really rich.
It might have been kind of fun to watch a dumbass republitard crash and burn on late night. O'Reilly prolly would have gone nuts on the set crew before an actual guest, and Hannity might just concoct a counter Colbert libtard pundit character to attract guests. No, what I'd have liked to see would be a train wreck more on the order of Glenn Beck, maybe with Palin as MC, or vice versa; or maybe Palin and Bachmann in some hot scissors action?
Oh yeah, Dennis Miller; he's like the one conservatard (unfunny) comedian, amirite?
I think Colbert will do well; he's a good interviewer, and pretty good at making a laughing stock of guests he maybe doesn't care for, without letting on (much). He's also kind of a goof, akin to a Letterman style goof, and in that respect, I think the choice makes perfect sense.
I look forward to watching on DVR before my 9:00pm bedtime.
Let's play "who will his band be".
He has shown good taste and surprised many with his guests. My vote goes for Brian Eno as leader of a constantly evolving and morphing band unit.
That's cute, but the little guy lives in my neighborhood, and is quite the family man. He has seen his time, though. Lucky man. Must also be rich as shit. Much richer than most session guys from the 70s could even dream of being.
This place has really gotten to be full of old conservatives.
That's a strange statement. How so?
I don't think he will do his colbert show act. I have listened to him being interviewed and he is a witty bright guy. time will tell
I think he's got a good chance of working out. Who knows? Does anyone have a better choice?
I'm dating myself somewhat, but I thought he was good in "Strangers With Candy."
It's not strange at all, it's true. A bunch of old conservatives and the lone Marxist, you. It's gotten much worse quite recently too.
Colbert is smart and funny, he'll be fine. The "character" was satire, he drops the veil all the time, it's not even a real character it's more schtick, despite the fact that some people apparently still think it's real. Some people believe Borat too.
I'm dating myself even further by referring back when Letterman first started out on NBC, and I was watching it with a buddy of mine who said, after some stupid but funny routine, "where else do you see this on TV?" Hopefully Colbert can bring that edge back. God knows those other guys are just trying to be Carson, still.
Loved Letterman growing up and in college but then he got incredibly unfunny and just flat out bitter after his heart surgery. I wanted to like him but he just turned his show into a late night version of of some butthurt cable news show host.
Looks like CBS is banking on continuing that model? I don't know, seems like less comedy more polyasshat.
Actually looking forward to Colbert dumping his current act, its gotten old and predictable.
His interviews are his best work, almost as good as Howard Stern.
IMHO, colbert is as funny as anyone out there and has the intelligence to take it beyond one character
colbert's niche with this is to be the intelligent interview that has bitingly funny commentary/repartee --- what late night started out as: adult level conversation
the other jimmy's have the late night (often-times lowbrow) revue show dialed. i don't think this show wants to compete directly with that.
when i want to laff at people or check in with pop culture --> two jimmy's
when i want to meet interesting people that aren't necessarily covered by TMZ --> hopefully, the promise of this future colbert late night project
(one can always hope)
Lettermans show became a parody of itself the last few decades. Like a movie sequel that pounded once funny jokes into the ground. It started going down hill after the man under the seats bit and Larry Bud Melman stopped. The best Letterman was the one with Andy Kaufman doing that stunt with the wrestler IMO
I don't know anyone who watches any late night talk shows with regularity. I don't see that changing with a new host. I think Colbert is funnier than Kimmel and Fallon...but yeah, none of the host changes made are going to save these shows IMO. It's a dying format.
I watch the Daily Show every day on my DVR, but thank the lord for that fast forward jump button, for commercials and 90% of guests. And some of the routines when they fall flat. I'm looking at you, Samantha B..
That's about it. Letterman and Leno were sad to tune into at the end, because both guys were funny when young. The two Jimmies are just unfunny now. Conan always was, which is sad, because he was lead writer on the Simpsons. I guess the format and especially the money just grind down any sort of edge. We'll see with this guy. Johnny Carson was the only game in town in his time. Now we have 500 channels and YouTube and Netflix.
I can't stand Colbert's character, which is precisely his point. What is funny about him is his take on how stupid and funny the obvious is. He simply points out how absurd Faux News ( and CNN to a lesser degree), and how contradictory people are (including himself, some of is stuff of Catholics is gold). He doesn't need his character to do that, and I will be glad to see it go.
As for his interviews, I thought Jane Goodall owned him pretty well.
He gets owned occasionally. My favorite was by a guy that has posted here:

SC: Have you ever thought about skiing without a parachute?
AM: No, I haven't.
SC: No, you haven't? So, you use a parachute?
AM: Oh yeah, yeah. For sure, everyone does.
SC: Are you serious?
AM: No.
Agreed. It was genius, but it's been tired for a while.
Yeah, he's fast on his feet, and cleverer than people give him credit for.
He has been pwned a few times (I think he lets some people do it as well), but so has everyone. I think he'll do well.
