We got a new pup a few weeks ago and she used our carpets as her personal latrine for a few days before we got hooked up with a kennel. What can I do to get the smell out, we dont want to be those people that have the stank-ass house. We bought the stuff with bacteria in it from the pet store but that doesnt seem to have worked. Help me!!!

Seriously - you can try Nature's Miracle but that shit doesn't really work if the padding under the carpet has been soaked. Steam Cleaning doesn't work, either. You can go and pour a 1/2 cup of white vinegar on the spot to keep the dog from identifying that place with "OK to urinate" but that smells, too.
Someone should have tought you the "crate, then dog" rule.
Scrub with some ammonia and water solution, then rinse a few times... if that does not cut it, then the next step is to try this mixture:
Baking Soda
White Vinegar
Liquid Dishwashing Detergent
3% Hydrogen Peroxide
Shop vac to get as much of the water etc. out as possible.
Make sure you test the carpet for color fast with both before using them.

good time to upgrade to tile or laminate or some sort of easy to main't shit. I wished my new puppy was pissing everywhere, it'd give me reason to tear up the carpet and upgrade. I'm thinking that polished/epoxy concrete. I just can't justify doing it yet since it's in such good shape.
I would also get a piece of the soiled rug, tie it firmly to the end of a whiffle bat and lay into the mutt, if nothing else it'll be loads of fun.

After taking the rugs to get cleaned three or four times (pup, 2nd pup, sick pups, etc.), we realized that buying a rug cleaner for $150 was cheaper. It seems to do the trick.
Edit to say that doing anything short of getting the rugs pro cleaned or using the cleaner didn't really help. Nature's Miracle seems to help, but nothing was like using the machine.

Seriously though, if you ever pull up your carpet/pad and see how disgusting it is underneath, you'l rip it all out. Then you'll subsequently realize how fucking hard it is to keep wood floors clean.
I found the ideal mix to be wood floors / tile with lots of area rugs! :D
