This thread motivates me.
I wanted to put it in the Maggot Art thread, because to me it's more art than building, but this thing truly is a work of art (and geometric prowess):
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x.../IMG_30611.jpg
I didn't build it though, credit goes to Mr. Earlywood. It's the frame of a large cupola that goes on top of an equally badass barn he timberframed.
It is truly awe-inspiring in person, as is Mr. Wood pictured next to it.
:)

Thanks. As far as the light goes, I put it there, because that's where my buddy wanted it. In reality, it is just ornamental. It lights the opening at night and creates a "luminous glow from above", but isn't intended to light the room.
I give up... the bar for master craftsman/fashion models just got raised up to somewhere near Plutos orbit...
Fashion model! Now we hadn't thought of that one... (Carhardt, look out!)

I get an email this morn saying shoot me the pics of your cupola, I want to show it to someone.

while I had my mouth wrapped around the exhaust of the belt sander,
spritey picked up some chisels.

I've got 5 more pairs of homebuilds currently under construction. Graphics for one of them:

Here's my contribution - warning: lots of pictures
Bought my house last summer, and this year's project was to build a South American-style mud oven before my family got here from Chile for my wedding. Used bricks scored on Craigslist for relatively cheap, 1 bag of Lye, a puny bit of cement and mortar, and scraps of wood from around. Overall cost was about $400, not including the barbecue I put in. Took quite a bit of work, but only because I'd never made one before. Here's the progression:

First burn - basically you fill this thing with wood, start a fire, and let 'er rip for a couple of hours to heat up the mud and brick to about 700 degrees. This is just the start. About an hour in, it's roaring with fire jetting out the chimney and flaming out the door

Raking out the coals once it's all done. After this you have to wait about 30 min until the oven cools below 500 degrees.

A chef friend came over and made this pesto chicken in a giant skillet. So good!

Took me a while to find a drop-in charcoal barbecue, but finally found this one for about $300. That little crank adjust the coal height.

This is the full setup. In between the oven and bbq is a work/prep area, pulled pork is on there is this pic.

We just had a pizza party and made 12 pizzas in there, 2-3 at a time. I love this thing, and just built a roof on it with some 10 foot fenceposts and scrap metal roofing. Overall a cheap project minus the bbq, and not too hard to build.
Camilo, that is bad ass. You should now hire some CPK waitresses.
Good stuff...I've always lusted after a brick oven.
wow, now i have to have a brick oven at my next place. well done sir.
That is very cool, Camilo... a neighbor has one and the homemade pizzas are so f'n good. Great excuse for parties and hanging out, though!
Tonight I built a lemon meringue pie from scratch. Zero pre-made ingredients. This was a first for me, and as you can see, I'm still floundering in the amateur ranks.

The crust was kind of challenging, and I ended up doing a lot of pastry masonry as I couldn't get the rolled out crust from the rolling area to the pie dish without complete destruction of the doughy hymen. With some patchwork and turd-rope rolling I was able to construct a decent flange.
It's chilling in the fridge now, testing tomorrow. Will report back with cholesterol level.
I designed/built 6 miles of this singletrack in the Big Holes...(I had a few more hands digging, though)

I like concrete. My dining room table:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_qbEdsfSD48g/SR...07%20028-2.JPG
I built a trough down the middle. Currently it's filled with splt peas. Detail:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_qbEdsfSD48g/SR...2007%20031.jpg
I also poured a top for my coffee table with a different multi colored technique. Sealing it up:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_qbEdsfSD48g/Rm...2007%20023.jpg
Finished product:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_qbEdsfSD48g/Rm...2007%20004.jpg
Working with concrete is actually pretty easy. The key is building a good mold:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_qbEdsfSD48g/SR...able%20005.jpg
The mold is built with melamine. The black pieces in the middle will form the trough; the table is poured upside down.
Then fill in the mold with concrete, vibrate and trowel. Because the top will be the future bottom it doesn't matter too much if you get it completely smooth.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_qbEdsfSD48g/SR...able%20009.jpg
Then crack the mold, flip the slabs (easier said than done), and polish with diamond pads. You can get it as smooth as polished granite if you want. Seal with food safe sealer and a wax and you're done.
^^^^^^^^^FKNA!!! Beeoooooootttyy work, Deej! I've wanted to do that for a long time.
Some day when I've got the time and money, I'll "accidentally" fuck up our kitchen counter. It'll be fun.
I'm glad to see this thread again.

This is probably the nicest piece I've ever done...the stone isn't as consistent in size as it looks. Having to repeat the same thing after finishing the first one really fucked with my head.
