Verbier skied fairly well this weekend. Saturday was a low light, low temp first day of the year that involved getting my nearly four year old her seasonal rentals, picking up season passes, getting the locker, etc. Lac skied well and it was surprising how much snow filed in there and down towards Ruinettes. Plenty of people poaching below that skiing the Ruinettes/Medran lift line with ‘limited’ cover. Sunday was blue bird and spring with some nice bumps. Unfortunately, the warm weather brought out the Baz, his nephew Edward Wiltshire Worcestershire and a few other Brits whose confidence exceeded their DIN setting. Limited terrain + early season ego was fun to watch without my daughter, less fun with.

What are you lot doing for insurance? I've gone with membership of the Austrian Alpine Club or Mountain Rescue Tyrol, which includes insurance and covers rescue ops. AAC costs more, but is more comprehensive, since it covers medical costs, third party liability etc, so I usually renew with them.

Edward wilshire the 3rd ? Great chap. I met him Elephant hunting in Namibia when he had divorced his third wife Charlotte Brooksworth Arlington to have an affair with his masseuse.

This was Edward Willshire the 4th. The 3rd ran off with Vivek the masseuse and they have just opened a wellness center just outside Goa. Apparently, he remained as fond as of the elephant’s tusk as he did Vivek’s.

edit: Ah...I mixed up the generations. Generational wealth aquired in the times of the Empire is a legacy you can get lost in. I bet the 4th was up to a lot of mischief with Baz's Eton boys? Has he settled in with the day to day business in the family office?

Been a member of the AAC for longer than i can remember. Now with a kid it's even more of a no brainer.

We started the season at 2962 today. Decent skiing but definitely not a lot of snow up there (yet). Nice to see some of the winter tribe

I didn't link up with anyone to ski with, but ended up stumbling on Dani Perret's pre-season camp in Engelberg and skied with them Fri-Sun. New snow on Thanksgiving day made for some creamy boot deep skiing on Friday morning. Then lots of sunny skies the rest of the weekend. Anything on-piste was total frozen shit by Saturday morning, but some of the adjacent off piste was still soft and not terrible for the end of November. The top portions of the glaciers skied pretty well all weekend. Got some good tips and tricks and an avy refresher too - overall really good experience.

Can any locals tell me which resorts have the best skiing right now in the Alps? Anywhere with a decent number of lifts open and some nice vertical/runs? My research shows it might be places like Verbier, Chamonix, Zermatt, etc., especially if they get this snow, but where else is decent?

engelberg was good up top and a sharkless soft skiing descent is possible down to trübsee i was told, which surprised me.

the whole alps are basically on piste or very high and careful glacier skiing right now.,
with 30-50cm more engelberg could actually be skiable on monday /tuesday.

Saas Fee is serving over 1,000 meters of vert and starting this weekend 1,800 meters. Zinal will be good off piste after this weekend's storm (they were very close last weekend).

Basically, it ends up with what's the best skiing you can perform.

Lifts are spinning all over the place, lots of vertical to be had. Yeah, it's the Alps, nuf said.

You wanna ski offpiste, pow, or what's your objective? Do you mind an occasional rock hit to your bases?

Dayum, just land a flight ticket. Anywhere in the Alps is good, or great skiing to be had, or not!

Thanks. I figured it would be similar conditions to what we have in Utah. About 75 inches so far at Alta/Bird and I saw similar totals at some places over there. I guess I'm looking for good cruising, which sounds great to me for early season anyways. Of course Engelberg off-piste in pretty good conditions would be awesome.

Objective is really just good groomed runs, maybe big vert but not totally necessary. That Saas Fee/Zinal/Engelberg beta is the type of stuff I was looking for. More than a few lifts would be great especially if it links up a valley or three. Tree lined groomers would be very nice but I realize lower elevations are generally thin. Not wanting to get greedy unless it gets good and there's decent coverage in which case greed is good!

Arriving in Milan Saturday so fingers and toes crossed for this storm.
