I haven't seen this posted here -- really interesting blog post about grooming at Palisades from three days ago

ICEBERG WARNING. There is a large iceberg in the middle of Donner Lake, floating west to east, currently about a 1/4 mile from the west end. Mariners should use caution.

First day of west wind we've had in a while. This sheet of ice detached from the west shore. Probably a bad idea to skate on it.
Skiing was ripping today at the valley. I thought I would just ski a few hours but ended up going bell to bell.

It’s been sneaky good out there lately. I’ve been putting in 30k+ days on the regular when I intended to leave around noon. If it’s not going to snow these sunny conditions with low sun angle are the next best thing - thankfully we have that December base. It’s been a shit season but I’m not even that mad about it.
So what edge bevel angles y’all using for the skis in use from your quivers?…. <sigh>
Took the miniest to the wood today. Skiing was ok I guess. DJ at the blue bar, so there people dancing blocking my view of the lake. Tiny people in mogul contests in between. And the crowds. Arrived at 10:30 and had to walk nearly 50’ to the snow. I Yelped the shit out of them for that.

It was actually fairly crowded. The Blue Bar pic was cropped it was cranking there. Fun drunk people watching. Longest line was still under 1 minute.
Didn’t see anyone on yesterday’s commute to ski

Haven’t been to a resort since it stopped snowing with the exception of a lift served backcountry mission. And what happened to my girlfriend yesterday at a fail resort reconfirms any desire to return soon. Uphill skier hit her from behind and sent her into a lift pole which due the shrinking snowpack and I presume a understaffed patrol had not put the pads down, she hit the ladder and was lucky to come out of it with just a broken rib. Oh and the person who hit her was a Fail employee :nonono2:
Some ski footage from Lake Tahoe...with no snow in 7 years and its still ripping!

TBH its still really fun.
Hat tip to Alpine Patrol, you are appreciated.
^ This. They are the best.
Having had the pleasure of toboggan rides by both AM and Oly patrols I have to say that they are both excellent.
After I broke my back sliding down Chute 75 and was sent by ambulance directly to Tahoe Forest the folks at Oly--patrol, clinic, security--looked after my gear. I got back everything, including the pole I broke trying to self arrest. That impressed me. Went I went back to patrol a couple of months later they told me that they had discussed my case at a conference they routinely have with the docs at TF. That impressed me as well.
When I dislocated my shoulder at AM--release in heavy wet snow--a TF ER nurse working in the patrol shack relocated it--gently, skillfully, painlessly. I was advised to tell the ER at TF where I went for xrays to tell them the shoulder popped back in when they took off my jacket.
When patrol arrived on the scene--Palisades chute runout--I apologized to the patroller, Casey Jones, for the trouble. He said "You're not screaming and you're not bleeding, so it's OK." I liked that. (Casey's son installed my water heater years later. It's a small town.)
Gonna be up in North Lake next weekend and looking for something to tour. Probably be looking for some solar corn. Silver Peak? Rose zone?
Hi, this is a reminder that hackers have been getting into accounts with stsle old passwords and causing mayhem scamming people in gear swap.
Update your passwords, be wary in gear swap, report suspect activity!
70* in Reno yesterday. No meaningful trends in the long range forecast, so swapped out the "winter" tire set (3PMSF all-terrain Nokians are as close as I'm currently using for winter tires).

OG- the above posts, I believe, relate to an incident from this last weekend- a real "Bad day at Black Rock" kind of day that every patroller gets once in a while. Not my story to tell.
Since I know that several ER docs check this forum on occasion- I'm sure that in your "fog of pain" with your shoulder injury, you thought that a nurse in the first aid room relocated your shoulder.
I can tell you with absolute, total certainty, that no nurse at Alpine Meadows would EVER violate TFH policy and treat a patient in such a manner. Ever, none. It's easy to get the details out of order when you're in pain. The ER makes a good living doing this stuff.
Those involved got the kudos. Though they didn't do anything. Glad it worked out.
fog of pain - good band name
It was many years ago. I know his name. I know he was a nurse. I was in very little pain. I think that if I had waited to get to the ER to have it relocated it the shoulder would have been in a lot more spasm, I would have been in a lot more pain, and it would have been much harder to relocate.
I'm not sure what your motive is in posting this but I know what happened. And I appreciated it. Although I apparently made a major faux pas in giving the patroler and the nurse bottles of wine instead of beer.
