Beautiful Wapiti
Guess I won't be filling the bird feeder this morning. Silly buck, what a funny place to lay down.
(glare on the left is because I took the pic through the window of the laundry room door and the sun is shining on the glass)

Hiker interrupts bears having sex and suffers the consequences

A 54-year-old hiker named Dan Richman was mauled by a bear in the Sierra Madre foothills of California on Monday and a state warden thinks it may be because he interrupted two bears getting it on, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The deer aren't exactly wild here; I find them looking in our front windows a lot.

OTOH, the ground squirrels are pretty industrious. Took them three days to dig those tunnels (12" diameter) and move those rocks

Ground squirrel is a burrowing rodent that hangs out in forestland. The ones around here look like this

Bodies maybe 4" long x 2" wide; prolly weigh 24oz. I've seen 3 sec hang times when they jump across the trail.
Riding buddy had one try to run through his front wheel last season - didn't end well for squirrel, and this kind of jerky-like stuff hardened between some spokes - was a bitch to get cleaned out.
classic western 'gopher' is a Richardson's Ground Squirrel.

Most dangerous animals around here are the deer mice that occasionally scurry around our living room--there've been a couple of bad hantavirus cases here.
That's a chipmunk no?
Didn't know they could move rocks.
Their singing is abhorrent.

They are all rats, just with better PR
I forget who said that here but it's always stuck with me. (The rats comment)

Any footage from his camera?
Fishies have such explosive power. Thrash!
Edit to add... anyone seen the vids of the great whites hunting seals and launching? Fuckin JAMMING wayyy out of the water.
Not sharks but I did see an Orca take a seal off of Whidby island. Orca came out of nowhere, breached, grabbed seal and dove. Pretty impressive when sitting in a sea kayak 50 yards away...
Speaking of aquatic mammalia, some shots of the not-so-wild sea lions off of Espiritu Santo in Sea of Cortez. One of the buggers ripped my snorkel off my mask
