I don't think the town of Truckee can dictate to the State of California what it does with it's roadways. If California wants to widen 89 north within the town of Truckee for a purpose outside the town of Truckee it will do so. Truckee can suck hind tit in that scenario, as it should

But Truckee does have jurisdiction over key access points to 89. So it's not that quite that simple. Also, generally speaking the State doesn't just steamroll over a city or town like that, as it creates a bad precedent for mutual cooperation.

Seriously tho, this thread sucks. Can it please fucking snow??? Current conditions are gonna be a tough sell for investors looking to pitch a new ski resort! lol...

Sucks how much ops have gone downhill after a nice turnaround following the Andy Wirthless years. I want to just bail but I love Alpine too much.

Developments are approved by the counties. If Sierra County were to approve a resort at Independence Lake (another property conserved by the TD Land Trust btw) Truckee would be one of the parties in the inevitable law suit, based on Truckee traffic already being in failure mode. And as best as I can tell, the folks in Sierra County, unlike Placer County, like things the way they are.

Rose felt like spring skiing in January yesterday afternoon as the temp hit 40+ deg. Today is looking like it's going to be even warmer.

Snow transitioned from winter to spring like slush in places on the Slide side. Fun to ski/carve up, but not so great for the allready thin snowpack.

I’ll contribute to offer my services to any billionaire that wants to lose money opening a new resort. Also, 89 has cal trans easements that would enable 4 lanes and the bike path. I know because my lawn would get paved.

Most of 89 in The Town of Truckee is handled via I80. Going south the pinch point is The Mousehole which opens up a whole can of worms dealing with the railroad.

And this is exactly what the resort empire is counting on. Probably goes to the logic of most dysfunctional relationships.

There are already plans for the bike path connecting from town to squaw on 89. Then there is a 3 and 4 lane scenario that is also being explored

Pretty much. I had a SB pass too for a number of years but most of my friends have Ikon and I’d end up there most of the time anyway, so… it is what it is.

Indeed. Some organizations are far worse in their lack of service or even their desire - they feel immune to any backlash. It's just incredibly sad to have that attitude rot the ski industry.

That’s the thing, SB is the same distance for me from Truckee as the other options but most of my every day ski friends live west shore / TC, IV, etc so it’s not worth the haul for them. Northstar would work but obviously not a real option for us (no offense to the gnarstar regulars - I do love the trees).

Whatever happened to the faux ski/golf resort scheme at dyer(sp?) mtn in plumas(?) county. How about Johnson ski hill?

Isn’t the Olympics still the most effective way to fast track mountain development? NEPA legislative exclusion like was done out of the salt lake area and CEQA Statutory Exemption, like for the LA Olympics and the recent stadium in SoCal.

Isn't this idea a "be careful what you ask for". Sure you'll end up with a stacked 4 (or 5, or 6) lane interstate between Reno and Truckee and dual lanes towards TC, and maybe some mass-transit options which may, or may not, remain viable post-Olympics. And you'll have bypassed any environmental concerns. So what's left ?

Good points OG but let’s just state the facts, the more money you have the more power you have for NIMBY. Ever notice that red light cameras only exist in poorer neighborhoods?

As for the national environmental group involvement, this is part of the NIMBY playbook for California. If I don’t want a new development for NIMBY reasons I find environmental issues, make donations to a national environmental group (these are tax deductible btw) and have them argue on my behalf. No NIMBY here, I am just a concerned citizen about the environment.

Now how can we can get Tahoe resorts to improve their operations. I suggest a campaign of the worse the operations get, the less money you spend at the resort on food, drinks and everything else. If enough people do that the bean counters will get the message.

I’m not necessary saying that it’s a good idea, but it’s my observation of how that shit gets steamrolled (bankrolled) through enviro regs and public opportunity to participate in government decision making. If I remember correctly, some of the home development at snowmass was approved under the Olympics NEPA exclusion but construction didn’t start until after the Olympics were over.

Thinking toward the east or south, aren’t there some areas in the basin range that are privately owned and ripe for new development/exploitation?

What about the area south of mammoth lakes that Dave McCoy put in his initial rope toe? Isn’t that area private property? I recall fantasy discussions of a few lifts in the Sherwins in Old Mammoth/Snow Creek.

I’d like to think that better transit options are a big part of a real solution.

There's no precedent for what's happening now. There's no way to know what will happen in the coming years except through observation and speculation. All we can do is work on making our footprint smaller.

People make it sound like climate change will be the end of the earth. The truth is that it will be the end of humans on earth. Excluding a cosmic event, earth will survive.

Back to skiing: this weekend was for sunscreen and park skis. We took a few laps down to the Solitude chair yesterday to hit a drop my kid wanted to show me, but it was 100% Belmont and Judah (today) outside of that. Today was an insane Junuary day. 60 degrees and full corn snow. My 10 year old is sticking 360's off the big park jumps like it's his job. My 7 year old sent every jump in SB's park to the down. Hucking little man. I'm feeling good hitting rails again. All in, great day.

Now, bring the snow!!

I skied today.
Snow was better than expected.
I layered down from Sat, so didn’t sweat as much.
2 of the 8 kids I coach podiumed in our Devo Team Woodchuck Cup race, too.
Crowds were mellow.
It was a good day.

Maybe I am naive but I would like to think that there is some integrity left in our news and the statement that 99% of folks reporting news have no idea if it’s true or not is simply sowing unnecessary distrust in the media. Don’t get me wrong I have huge issues with our media, I just believe such statements are only helpful to the Russians and Chinese who don’t believe in freedom of press.

Also if you believe the climate doomsayers, think that climate change will end skiing over the next few years or don’t believe that climate change will have any effect on the ski industry then I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you.

Let’s keep things fact based here and avoid the hyperboles. There is already too much of that on the interweb.

I appreciate the faith that you have in our news media. I do believe that there are still real journalists out there, but I really think it depends upon what they're reporting.

Between the last couple of elections, Covid, climate change and the economy, I no longer pay any attention to mainstream media. Our media is sold to the highest bidder. I do spend my days listening to pod casts with actual experts. Folks with PHD's and lifetimes dedicated to their fields. We live in a very wild world. I think a lot of our information is distilled into tiny digestible bites because the real big picture is hard to swallow.

Anyhow, life is good. We all live in one of the most amazing places on earth and get to slide on snow to get our giggles out. I'm OK with a bit of blissful ignorance.
