You can't really go wrong anywhere on Nantucket- except going in August. September is the time to be there. PM me- I've got a bike/ Kayak rental place that my buddy owns. Many of you who have been going there a long time would know the previous owner-"The Geek" he drove a bright green "Thing" around town, and looked like a yeti. He was a lawyer from my home town. My buddy bought the business from him.
I used to hang out at Surfside and Cisco. Really fun areas- closer to town, and The Chicken Box. If you aren't bringing a 4wd truck with good ground clearance, 90% of the island will be unaccessible to you. There aren't many paved roads, and by August the dirt roads will be rutted to hell. Huge puddles, and tranny eating ruts. Just thought you should know.

Without good clearance 4WD 90% of the island may be inaccessible geographically, but most places do have paved roads or decent dirt roads--condition of those really depends more on rain than anything else. I never had trouble getting to Noba Deer or most other beaches in a front wheel drive low clearance car (I never tried when it was really muddy, but that's not usually real beach weather). If he's in Madaket, for example, he should be able to get close to nearly anywhere in a regular car. Also, if you're really planning on making use of a 4WD car you'll need an oversand permit.
Second the September>August (and June, and July to a lesser extent) thought, but I doubt he can change dates. Best times there were always late May into June, and September. As of July 4 the place goes batshit crazy. As of Labor Day everyone completely disappears. Kind of weird to walk through town Labor Day weekend if you've been there immediately before then--feels like a ghost town.
i spent summers on island as a kid and then lived there full time for about ten years till moving to fernie b.c. a year ago. stick with madaket nice beaches with harbor or ocean choices and youre only 7 miles from town. short drive or bike there is also some public transit busses now that go in and out of town. there has been a lot of erosion in madaket over last 5 years or so the beach proper is much smaller now than it once was. dont miss out on bartlett farms for food and produce and cisco brewery for some nice beer or triple 8 vodka...
