so MD bro came over for coffee this AM, he just texted me to say he is positive for covid so i will have to keep an eye out
the symptom seems to be the sniffles but these MD bros have always been out recreating with the sniffles so i never thot anything of it

Haven’t seen it mentioned yet, but fed gov announced this week $8B for new covid vax research. People like Eric Topol have been saying that the tech exists for better vax (eg sterilizing, variant proof nasal vax), but there isn’t gov support in the US for the research and trials. Now there is.
Hope he's right. Though other virologists think it's unpossible, pointing to both the immune system's homeostasis and the flu mist vaccine that was neither sterilizing nor flu proof. Will be awesome if we can knock out covid, and then the other respiratory viruses. Certainly should help to have a bunch of research.Quote:

I'd give it a solid 2 more weeks before it totally clears, but hopefully you bounce back sooner. Not sure about quarantine but 10 days is what I read on the googles, I think cdc said 5 if no longer showing symptoms, but there's a lot of talk here (a few pages back) about it. Feel better.Quote:

everyone is different so nobody can tell you how long your crud will last. As for quarantine, the guidance is confusing and conflicting. As I understand it, one overlooked key is whether your symptoms are improving. Everyone just quotes the "days" guidance from the CDC, but I believe those guidelines only apply if symptoms are improving. But if symptoms are improving, I think CDC says that you can go out with a mask after 5 days and are GTG after 10. 5 days and feeling fine, you can end isolation and go to a mask until 10 days... unless:
You could lose the mask after 5 days that point if symptoms generally improved, afebrile 24/hr without meds, and you have a negative antigen.
I tend to suggest continue isolating from vulnerable people for at least 7 days and don't antigen test until day 7 because most people are still positive at day 5.
Anyone suggesting 2 negative 48 hours apart is living in early 2020. Science moved on from that bullshit.
Day 6 since face to face therapy session for my wife with a client that tested positive a few hours after the session. Wife has tested negative on Ag tests and has felt fine/good the entire time. Ended her masking methods at home this morning. Still needs to wear a mask at work for 4 more days. Hurray for good filtration and ventilation. Building that she’s working at has very updated system and she works next to a small cr box.
Got smacked upside the head by covid last week. 2nd time having it, 1st time was late last summer. I spent all last week splitting childcare duty for my 19month old with my wife, while also trying to keep my work team moving on projects in between bouts of the fetal position. thankfully my wife never got it, and my kid is probably the one who gave it to me (we just thought it was a minor sniffle/cold that he and kids his age seem to contract 2-3 times per month). Im bouncing back much quicker this time around than the previous infection though so thats nice, even though the pit of misery was deeper at it deepest this time around.
Back in the office today with the door closed and mask on when i go into shared rooms (like the lunchroom/kitchen). I dont think it would be so shitty if i didnt have to take care of a toddler who needs to be entertained at all times... that shit is exhausting when healthy let alone when sick. still have a lingering cough at times, but im back! The week went really fast but it was honestly kind of nice to deload from work and stress and mostly just focus on hanging with my kid, and sleeping/resting.
It finally caught me last weekend. Felt weak and groggy, with terrible night sweats and dry coughing, and a raging sore throat. Felt better today, but took a test to be sure, and sho nuff, I'm positive. Really fucks up my week, but oh well.

Day 11 and still testing positive. Currently, only real symptoms include fatigue and right lung discomfort. Still sucks very much. I am starting to think that I will not be able to enjoy spring skiing, and I am a bit depressed. Also, while I am glad that this is my first go-round with the rat flu, I am starting to wonder about the efficacy of the four shots
Had my first go with it early March, sounds like I had an easier time than you but I had the same thoughts about the shots. Maybe we could’ve had a worse experience without them?Quote:

It's unreal how supposedly intelligent people could make any conclusions, even vague conclusions, about the efficacy of the vaccine based on how sick they are. WTF? Should we have had an alternate universe where you got to see that without the shots this awful disease would have had you in the ICU? Is that what it would take to convince you?

I have no doubt my recent case would have been even worse without the bivalent booster. It kicked my ass and I'm still struggling a bit at altitude, but sloooowly getting better.
Depression is real with many folks post-covid, lots of recent, sciency, long-form articles out there to back it up.

Personally, I observe a lot of survivor bias, forgetfulness, and inability to adjust for and address potential for a low probability / high consequence outcome of long covid. The 40+ athlete thread, try to avoid catching covid should be #1 for maintaining athleticism into and through middle age.

The fraction of incident diabetes cases attributable to SARS-CoV-2 infection was 3% to 5%.
MeaningThis study found that SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with a higher risk of diabetes, suggesting that these infections may have contributed to an excess burden of diabetes at the population level.

What does the math mean? Summary, it gives a floor too low and a ceiling too high to tell us what the real case rate is.
Because, 4/100k means the average person goes 25,000 days between infection. Intuitively that rate is way too low. And we know the official case counts are way too low - the test centers are mostly closed, and even health officials who catch covid report they cannot get their cases officially counted. OTOH, 600/100k means 170 days between infections. Considering the undercount factor, this is too high (I don't think the average person gets infected every 40-80 days).
Is it stupid to risk long covid?
All that said, long covid incidence among the vaccinated seems to be quite low. I've seen 0.5% recently. And I think most of these cases resolve over time. So maybe letting it all hang out doesn't add too much risk of getting screwed. If you catch covid once or twice a year, then over a decade, maybe you have 15 infections. That's roughly 7% chance of long covid, and if you think most cases resolve, maybe 1-2% chance of getting hosed permanently. And you'd still be living (most likely), just limited to skiing easy groomers (and maybe unable to taste hot chocolate, or smell a fart in your fartbag).
I'm staying cautious until we learn more about the virus and its effects.
