NFL 2015/16

The interviews on NPR this morning were classic.

We interrupt Bobby Dougherty who's laying asphalt to ask him what he thinks. "Wahyyyy Towmmmm, Wahyyyy! I named my sawn afta youuuuu! You awr the best qwarterback eva, you didnt need to do that. Aww Towmmy boy."

"I don't give a flying fart what Wells says, or what the ex-Chair of Princeton's physics department, or what the fine fellows at Exponent labs say."

True...will it affect Rodgers now that he can't overinflate the balls? What about all the other QBs doing the same thing? Which it sounds like includes just about every one of them.

Yep. The headlines from the report going after Brady show a clear demonstration that they barely read the report. The "evidence" against him is pretty slim, and the conclusions are even worse. Saying he wants them deflated so they aren't OVER-inflated doesn't equate to requesting that they go below the allowed PSI range. That's a huge lapse in logic.

My quick take typed from a phone - As a person who writes expert reports for use in civil matters for a living, their case is convincing but thin and propped on a LOT of assumptions. Additionally, the investigators alter data to fit the statements of referees and their viewpoints.
I would like to see their engagement letter / instructions because it does not read like a report that was intended to present any evidence that contradicts their position. If that is the case, the Patriots should have been allowed to have its own experts participate and prepare its own report. The Wells team was apparently given free reign to make assumptions based on its opinions. When you start stacking opinion based assumptions upon each other, it is a very shaky foundation to use to invoke harsh punishment.

Then you also know that the standard of proof in those civil matters turns on "more probable than not." Circumstantial, but I think most of us can connect the dots.

No doubt, this is fun, but that's it for me and any other Seahawk fan I've discussed with. We still lost and I dont think this changes anything. Its just fun. Especially since 20,000 people in New England woke up with Physics phds this morning.

eh, I think most fans who are not Patriots homers can connect the dots. I'm no Seahawks fan, and I'm no Patriots hater, and the report seems pretty clear to me.

Haven't read the report, probably won't. Locker room text messages about TFB preferring the ball be inflated less than 16 pounds is nothing. What's the smoking gun?

All the active players have been saying this is no big deal move on. We are talking about 1-2 psi in a football after all.

While they are paying Wells millions I think the NFL should do a report on players use of PEDs, request all their phone and credit card records, accuse them of not cooperating if they won't and use the standard it is more likely than not to determine if they used a PED. Wouldn't that be fun.

Didn't realize just who Exponent is until now. They are a hired gun that finds evidence to support a conclusion, not a independent testing lab.

This is fucking hilarious - According to this article citing the report, Brady talked to the ball dude for 55 minutes in the 3 days after the Colts game. 55 minutes.

What the fuck would they talk about for 55 minutes besides a cover up? It's not like they would be having phone sex since, ahem, Brady has a supermodel wife.

Without a doubt, that's the funniest thing now. Not one Pats fan has said "yeah, it does look pretty damning"; I'm certainly a homer for my teams but I'd like to think that I would not be that delusional. On NPR, they interviewed Brady's agent and his denials were laughable.

Does anyone think if he had just said yes I did it to begin he'd be fine? I mean I think we all know everyone who plays professionally is trying to gain a competitive advantage and I think if he'd just owned it and not tried to cover it up he'd be ok now.

I still don't see how this "deflation" would have made a fucking difference in that game since the D won that game, but OK. Let Brady sit for the first 2-4 games and give his back-up some experience. You know he's not gonna pay the fine personally after Kraft basically said "yeah, no" so BFD.

Oh - and I am not a Pats fan.

Hopefully this will mean that the NFL supplies the balls, not the teams. No reason for them not to - imagine if pitchers got to prep their balls. Even the playing field n'shit.

I think it's absolutely true that it had no impact (or no outcome impact) on the Colts game. I don't think anyone thinks otherwise. But did it have any impact on other games? I don't know. On the 538 site linked from ESPN, they noted that the Pats have an absurdly low fumble rate. Could this play a role? Who knows.

as far as I know they check the balls every game, no? Are they accusing the Pats of chronic deflation? I thought this was only about this one time?

I recall that Brady was reportedly one of the main QBs that lobbied for the rule change that allowed each offense to use their own game balls. So the assumption is that that game was not the first time.

In any case, BFD. Tweaking air pressure is the equivalent of going 70 in a 55mph zone. Write him a ticket and move on.

The pats do not have an absurdly low fumble rate. Their fumble rate is in line with Peyton manning's colts teams. Elite rhythm passing game = few turnovers.
