Promising new ~300g touring binding.. SLATNAR!

Skimo co has a new binding on their wall, from a Slovenian company called Slatnar. These are the only pair in North America, they were sent to the shop as samples and I have no idea if or when they will be available. There is exactly zero information about them on the web that I can find.

Here are some features:
- 3 fixed release levels
- beautiful magnetic risers with 5 height options (including flat)
- easily rotates 90deg and 180deg
- gapless with elastic travel in the heelpiece
- BY FAR the best "freeride spacer" design I have seen, with a robust, height adjustable AFD
- 330g weight per binding

How exciting and how decision challenging to have a promising, yet untested binding to throw into the mid-weight mix.

For goodness sake change that name!

Short list of companies that have released tech bindings that sucked or broke:

Dynafit (Tristep- the "innovative" toe piece invited problems that didn't exist on the original, Speed Radical exploding heels)
Plum (original Guides- broken toe wings)
ATK (broken toe wings on whatever their first tech binding was called including the La Sportiva branded version sold in the US)
Marker (broken pins and pins falling out on Kingpins)
Salomon (Shifts- migrating AFD and other annoying things)
Fritschi (multiple redesigns to ensure Xenic and Vipec toe pieces suck less)
G3 (Onyx- stupid)

I, for one, and finished with paying money to beta test tech bindings.

Splatgnar?

Pretty sure slatnar is in the Nordic jumping world and revolutionized the bindings in that area.

Just look how awesome and inviting that current generation Speed Radical is next to it. Perhaps less sexy at first glance, then you realize they've been refining for a decade (yes the 1st gen heels exploded) and it will just work work work. Who doesn't love a Radical toe? And only 330g!

I honestly think I liked the Onyx better then the Ion or Zed! those two develop bad slop and brakes are whack. Onyx was pretty burly for the time, would even ski some resort on it and i liked the heel system you could lock/unlock touring mode and levers all with a pole. but have broken the heels and seen pins shear off.

Right now reppin the marker alpinists and they are killing it! Pretty insane clamping force. I like the siding heel afd on the splatgnars though

and they still pre-release a decade later! Familiar awesomeness included! Dynafit #heart!

my problem breaking into this category would be to come up with something that is better than SkiTrab's vario toes and ATK heels.Tall order imho

Does your shop actually ski, and get a good feel for the bindings you sell, before you put them on the shelf?

They need to name that binding the "William."

They aren't for sale, they were sent a pair as samples and put them up on the wall for customers to play with until the season starts and they can start testing them on snow. These are likely the only pair in the country right now.

I haven’t found prerelease to be an issue with radicals but I do think the radical toe is one of the best out there for durability and skiing performance. I’ve still got 15y old steel 5hole toes that seem to work the same as the first day. Pre release has so many causes (adjustment, alignment, specific tech fittings in the boot) it’s hard to draw conclusions from the web or elsewhere.

My post was more tongue in cheek about a “330g binding”… why be a beta tester when the speed rad is the same weight and has the kinks worked out as much as any binding. YMMV, if they’re not to your jam no worries.

The Speed Radical has a horrific ramp angle that needs to be rectified with a toe shim. One of the worst offenders out there :/

Hoping Skimo or the Slatnar website has an end of season sale. Would love to check these out. But not gonna guinea pig them at full price when ATK’s can be found cheaper.

the verticals were good but the Rad was a piece of shit, I broke 1, a buddy broke 2 know a guide I know broke 6, light guys broke them just walking along cuz of a poor design, any engineer could tell you that was gona break

as for the big boots apres Vulcan the beast sucked, the Khion sucked, speed nose on hojis was stupid, hope fully Dynafit quit trying to design their own boots and just let Hoji do it
