What's it worth?

1999 Audi A6 Quattro Wagon. Really good cosmetic condition for the age (paint has clear coat issues, but body panels look straight; interior looks really good). Seller claims it's in solid mechanical shape, despte its 200k miles. Haven't checked it out myself yet nor has my mechanic. Considering it as a car for the teenage dudes.

Any particular problems with this vintage of Audi I should look out for? Assuming it really does have decent mechanicals and no major repairs right out of the bat, what do you think it's worth?

Does it have a pre-installed rollbar?

How is the paint on the roof?

A timebomb that hasn't exploded is still a timebomb.

I sold my '98 a4 2.8 with 200k to a vw mechanic for $1200, with a ridiculous debrief of everything wrong with it.

I can't say, but my 2001 a4 1.8 is still being driven daily by my parents neighbor. 200k plus, and not many issues other than maintenance on an Audi of that vintage. If you have an honest Audi mechanic and it's going for $1500 or so, why the fuck not? If repairs cost more than price junk and buy something else? It's 1500.

I would be scared that the timebomb would go off when you needed to get somewhere or worse yet, when you were somewhere and needed to get home.

I'd get them a little Toyota/Isuzu pickup with 4cyl/5speed/4wd/regular cab. Reliable, slow, cheap to maintain.

Like I said this would be for the teen members of the dude family. It's a 20-minute drive to downtown, and a 45-minute drive to the skihill. So even if the thing did suffer sudden failure, it's hard to feel too deeply concerned about that.

Nonetheless, I'm already losing my ardor for this particular beater. I'm in no rush, unless and until the current beater (an old Saturn) shits the bed. That thing is on double-secret probation and I refuse to fall prey to the fallacy of sunk costs. If it needs one more serious repair it gets sold to the junkyard.

Bombproof -as long as the control arms stay together, the timing belt is done on schedule, the flex pipes don't rot out, the cats aren't hollow , the trans doesn't blow up, water doesn't go under the carpet , the timing chain tensioners don't piss oil, the head gaskets aren't blown, the instrument cluster still works , the headlights aren't frosted over, the wheel bearings aren't all bad, the steering rack , pump and hoses have all been changed, the seat heaters still work, the window regulators are all replaced, the drivers door latch still works, start with those and then if you're still interested I'll give you the next list.

Well the same can be said for any car, so YMMV.

Personally I would rather have everyone pile into my kid's car than have everyone, my kid included, pile into someone else's. At least this way someone I taught and trust is in control.

Go for it Pio, Audi parts and labor are totally cheap, and Audi is well known for reliable cars over 100k miles, and you have awesome taste in cars. Saturn is one badass ride.

I mentioned it in another thread but I was absolfuckinglutely blown away by the number of Saturn Vue’s I saw on the road on one of my last trips up north.

I mean these parts bin specials haven’t been produced in what, 10 years?!? And this was in a heavy winter salt area. Shouldn’t these things have disintegrated years ago?

Lots of Buick Rendevous too. But I’m pretty sure it’s the same car. Equally as miserable, but apparently un-killable.

Saturn Vue = plastic body panels. Could be a lot of rust underneath, who knows. Buick Rendezvous is a Pontiac Aztek with different skin; not the same thing as the Vue.

Some years of the Vue used a Honda V6 motor.

All of these vehicles pale in comparison to the glory of a classic Audi.
