So it seems to me if I just use my AT&T iphone at wifi hotspots only I shouldn't be getting banged with roaming charges. I know 3G and 4G data charges for roaming in Canada with a US smart phone are freaking horrifying.
Fortunately I will have a verizon cell w/a US Canada plan with me so I'm OK on voice.
Web search proved to be pretty much useless.

You'll find something there to make you happy. WiFi = no charge, unless you are paying for the wifi ;)
Correct, just make sure the 3G is turned off so you don't spend a couple hours surfing gay midget porn and realize the 3G had been on and you weren't on wifi.
And don't forget to set your e mail settings so that they don't update automatically
