  3. Hi Jani,

Sorry I didn't visit the site for almost two months, so I missed your message and question. Apologies for that.

The shelf paper worked quite well as a fun facelift to a pair of ugly skis. I would say, though, that it does not look like a factory finish at all. First of all, the material has no real depth, so it really does not look like wood so much as a printed-wood-effect on a vinyl surface -- even under a big thick series of coats of shiny sealer. I assumed that would create some depth, but it still looks fairly Ikea-like, as opposed to some of the other techniques people suggested with alternate veneer materials.

Generally, the shelf paper surface has lasted quite well, because as I said it's under a thick layer of surfboard resin. But
    A) The resin was difficult to get just right -- I couldn't figure out a way to get air bubbles out of it completely

    B) The resin quite possibly stiffened the skis and altered their performance.

    C) Despite assurances to the contrary, the resin I used (polyurethane-based) actually did crack at the flexiest points of the ski. That was disappointing, but hey, it was worth the experiment to find out.

So, I would say if you can solve the topcoat issue, the shelf paper underneath will last just fine.

Adhering the shelf paper to the skis was one thing that was very important -- the 'sticky' backing that's already on the paper was not nearly strong enough.

I rolled a layer of waterproof contact-adhesive on the ski, and brushed some on the strips of shelf paper I had cut out. The contact-adhesive reacted with the shelf paper, making it stretchy, so it was tricky to get it lined up and laid down over the ski without any bubbling or wrinkles.

I basically had to start at the center, with a strip of the original peel-away backing that was originally covering the shelf paper leading out in either direction. Then I carefully rolled the paper onto the ski from the center, moving outward and shifting the old backer out of the way as I went. Otherwise, the contact-adhesive would stick immediately, and you'd never get it apart again.

So, if what you gathered from this is that is was a tricky, time-consuming process, you're right. I can advise you to trouble yourself with it only if you're really interested.

But if you do, have fun, and don't hesitate to ask any other questions that might present themselves to you that I haven't answered here.

    Best,
    Shawn

about the shelf paper topsheet. Could you tell me more about your tips on the subject and how have the skis lasted?

    Regards,
    Jani from Finland
