I normally refrain from posting TR's on this board due to my camera skills. In fact, rarely do I even take a camera on any outdoor pursuits. Took one this time...kept it in the dry bag most of the day so not too many useful shots.

We didn't take pics of most of the trout, especially the larger fish, (mostly Browns), due to the water temps reaching 75 fucking degrees! After the fight, they deserved to be properly revived and immediately returned to a good, well oxygenated holding spot. The river holds mostly Browns with pockets of water holding Yellowstone Cutts and big Rainbows. This water is on Reservation land, (outside Thermopolis), and only boasts about 700 fish per mile. So, you gotta work for your fish but when you hook up, it's almost a guarantee you have a hog on!

Awesome day on the water and some incredible fishing, despite the 100 degree air temp and dangerousy high water temps. 8 miles of river were covered in 10 hours. Two sections of excellent class IV whitewater and a handful of class III sections. (Sorry, no pics of the whitewater...didn't want to lose or bust the camera).

First fish of the day and the smallest, in length. The water was cool enough to get a decent, photo JONG shot. The only Cutty of the day as well.

looks like a great day out there. thanks for the pictures!

A 30" brown...wow...any idea how a brown fights relative to any saltwater species? Fights like a ________ (bluefish, striper, 'cuda, bonefish...etc.) ??

I guess I didn't take a close enough look at that photo before I uploaded it! He really was watching the fish.

Well, I have never hooked into a 30" Brown myself...someday...and I'm not a salt water expert. I wouldn't compare it to a Bonefish though. Probably similar to a cuda although I've yet to hook into a cuda on a fly rod. Sorry I can't be of more help.
This river seems to hold Browns that jump! Normally, western Brown Trout hit a fly very agressively, run, and stop in the deepest hole they can find. Maybe a couple more long runs if you're lucky but nothing like the erratic behavior of a Bonefish or a healthy Rainbow.

Nice!!! My dad grew up near there and he is the reason I got into fishing (he is from Riverton).

There's is some unreal fishing around Riverton. With basic map reading skills, a tribal license and a concept of the fucked up WY water laws, you can fish for a lifetime.

Do you ever head over by Casper to fish the Platte? Casper has some GREAT areas as well, with BIG fish.

Yeah. I usually get a day on the Grey Reef junk show section and a day or 2 on the Mile. It's pretty much a spring and fall thing for me. From what I know, the summer month aren't really all that good. ??? I prefer the upper N. Platte around the CO/WY border. Beautiful water! Prolly too low for a float now though. ???

Just curious, can any old shmo fish in the canyon, or do you need special permission? Ive driven through it a handful of times but thought it was off limits. ie: you need to be there with a reservation resident.

nice lookin fish btw

You can fish there, but you need to buy a reservation permit in addition to a fishing license.

Edit 4 - What were they eating Schwerty?

Keep in mind you can only wade the "canyon" sections with a res permit. Floating, (which in summer is by far the best way to go), needs to be with a guide. There is only one place with a permit - Wind River Canyon Whitewater and Fishing. It will cost you but if you are gonna spring for someone to be on the oars for you...that's the place.

It's not exactly technical fishing right now. Believe or not, those monsters were coming up to Fat Alberts and other big foam junk. Size 12 - 16 copper johns and your basic Rubber leg patterns on the bottom. JJ's and Double Bunnies for the chuck and duck options. From what I know, that river, at least until you refer to it as the Bighorn, doesn't require much match-the-hatch fishing. Some here and there and possibly a bit
in the winter months but it ain't spring creek angling! The fish were on the move and were feeding when the opportunity came around.
