Theodore: thanks...but I wonder how to handle the shipping to North Europe?:) Anyway, thatīs worth considering. Bullit is such a sweet bike...I tested my friend's last summer and it felt just so right from the beginning, the balance point of the bike is spot-on, really easy to trackstand, wheelie, bunny hop (for full sus), ride drop-offs etc.

Something like PlayHarder's Brodie would be nice too!!Some all around hard tail with disc brakes and decent fork...

edit to add:
It's a Schwinn Mesa, all stock parts except tires which are Panaracer Fire Pro XC (Nice tires + red = great combination ;-)) I want to change the shocks because they have started to make wierd hissing noises (Maybe due to too many endos and hard wheelie landings) and hopefully will get disk brakes before going to chamonix this summer (as will mainly be going down :D )

Guy I worked in a shop with had the frames made back in '95. He was way ahead of the 24" game, shame he had no business sense and was kinda flakey otherwise, but boy could he ride.

He had the bars made, too. Like 1-degree sweep and wide as fork. I made the peg boss and dremmeled out the spider bolt so I could run my front brake cable through fork. Though I haven't done barspins or feebles in years. Fun bike to ride, I wish I took advantage of it. Got back into riding last summer, and think this summer is gonna be my breakout year :)

03-19-2004, 02:49 PM
CS - the Truth and AC are about as much alike as a Porsche and a VW. They're both bikes, they both have two wheels and suspension, but they are COMPLETELY different animals. The Truth is much more effecient (approaches stable-platform technology while still retaining all the small bump forgiveness of a four-bar suspension.

Don't get me wrong, the AC is a great bike, but it's significantly heavier (about 6 pounds) and MUCH cushier. I basically bought it as a back up bike or the go to bike when I'm riding more technical trails (I wouldn't even think of taking my Truth off a three foot or higher drop).

hev/IG - Problem?!? Well, yeah I guess so.

Hi my name is Gill...

CS

I stand corrected. I just figured they have the same linkage (though I did notice different position points, or whatever that is), and were both in the 4" range. But whatever, sweet rigs either way.

I will have to disagree with your "I'm gonna tear this shit up" bike. To do that properly, you need this:

CS - Holy shite! That's not a bike, that's a tank. Too many pivots to maintenance for me and tha rear hydro line routing worrys me. I could see ripping that sucker off on the first log pile I crossed.

Here's my dream "tear this shit up" bike:
http://www.knollybikes.com/photos/1.jpg

I'm just a sucker for a 4-bar suspension. Plus it's always nice to support the up and coming builder

As for the difference between the Truth and the AC Air - the rear pivot location on the Truth is on the chainstay, slightly below the rear axel (true Horst link). On the Giant, it's on the seatstay. Theseatstay location puts it above the rear axel and allows braking to stiffen the rear suspension action, while the Truth's suspension action is unaffected by braking. Yes, I'm a suspension nerd...

Basom - sweet bike man!

I agree that milkmans bike rocks - I have a friend who does a lot of urban assault riding. He has broken like three hardtails in the last year. He bought a Cove and it's been bombproof.

Surprising lack of roadies here (okay, maybe not too surprising).

I think my Imelda Marco-esque velo quiver just doubled the number of road bikes in this thread.

I'm down to four bikes at the moment (from 7 last year):

http://www.snibbor.net/images/velofleet_3.27.04.jpg

1. Surly Steamroller fixie/SS (flip-flop hub). Built it up from leftover N.O.S. parts scrounged on eBay. My summer coffee-foraging rig, spring fixed-gear Wash Park spinner, and fall metric-century bike. Best bike I've ever owned. One of the cheapest and simplest, too.

2. custom Waterford "cyclo-road." quick geometry and low BB but clearance for mud and 35c cross knobbies. Meant for all-round riding, plus still able to fake it in the odd Cat 4/5 road race or cyclocross race. Full Campy Record. I've even bolted on aerobars and done tri's on this fokker. I spec'd it with fender bosses, so in 20 years it'll have a nice patina and serve as a foul-weather commuter.

3. KHS Team. Ghettocrosser. Softail 'cross bike, built up for winter, the fall cyclocross series, and the urban wasteland. Mostly Ultegra, some 105, and whatever else I found in the trash.

4. Torelli cyclocross frame - probably ruined for good.

5. 1972 Cinelli Super Corsa. Restoration project. Full Campy Nuovo Record and super-rare 1st-generation Phil Wood hubs. Exquisite ride.

Yeah, it kind of sucked. Decent build quality and ride, but the thing was a tank (24 lbs. all up).

Pushing that behemoth around in my first 'cross race left me in such an anaerobic crash that by the time I got to the finish line (dead last, natch) I thought I was looking through toilet paper tubes...

Altagirl--I love your new bike. Beautiful.

Here's mine, which I also love! BUT, rear tire clearance is nil (a 2.3 BARELY fits back there, and with any mud I'm screwed). Foes offers a new rear triangle this year for a whopping $500. I'm considering selling it on principle alone--those fockers screwed up the design in the first place, and want to make ME pay that much to fix their mistake? WTF?!

But I like the bike so much I have a hard time thinking of selling it...

Sweet bike! :D

Sucks to pay for an upgrade like that, but at least it's available. I think I'd go with the 2.3s for a while though - probably enough for most situations anyway... but I hear you, it's the principle.

Thanks for the compliments CS and AG :)

AG--I dont' so much mind the 2.3's (technically 2.25 IRC Trailbears), but the clearance is soooo small that any bit of mud instantly jams up the tire. Fortunately we live in Utah where mud is more of a myth than reality...

I'll probably buck up and get the replacement later this summer. Other tempting options are the Ventana El Chamuco or an AS-X. But Foes was always that 'dream bike' and I dont' think I can let it go!

and Frizz--go back to your dirt jumps! ;)

It's way different then what I was used to (SC superlight). But now that I'm getting used to the weight and the tighter geometry I'm really liking it. I haven't noticed any pedal bob, it pedals nice and smooth. The 5th element is great, in rocky and rutted stuff the back wheel is glued to the ground and it still takes bigger hits.

I'll have to come down and ride some SLC trails with you guys and let you take a spin on it.

It's so amazing what a difference a shock can make. The Bullit climbs like a tank w/ no bob at all. It basically wheelies the whole way, but it'll get you there.

Guess I don't know quite what you mean by "rallied" but mostly the 575 has just been on XC oriented rides with a fun descent, like Bobsled or Jacobs ladder. It climbs really well and sucks up the small drops (~2') I've done at this point like they're barely there. I like that you can drop the seatpost all the way down for descents. Anyway, it'll get a more thorough testing this weekend in Moab.

They have them at Go-Ride (~3300 South, 400 East) if you're looking.

Note the large volume grocery carrying basket, the cushy yet aero seat (OK just cushy), the sweeping lines and extra beefy struts for max acceleration not to mention the practical reflectors, fenders large curb pumelling tires. She's sweet! Be in awe!!!

my new ride:

Planet-X Pitbull 'Jamaican' edition...:)

This is my first real hard tail, owned two k2 ful sus frames, attack 2.0 and Disco Monkey; both managed to do their job but were not excellent in any sense.

First ride with the Pitbull just done...hmmmm, fun as hell but definately not good for a pure trail/xc riding (such a small frame!). This bike seems to peg for any kind of fun/trick riding (doh!...labeled as 'urban/street' frame). And I'm stoked for that eventhough I'm not a trick/trials/dirt master. But still I'm pretty happy that I opted for decent hard tail with good components and didn't buy shitty full susser...(= budget would have not allowed to buy, let's say, Bullit with good specs)

Can't wait to try it on some (smallish) dirt jumps. I also might change the springs of the DJ I on the front from 110mm to 130mm but I'm not sure yet (as I love to ride steep rocky sections, the slacker head angle would be nice for that, maybe)

But as said, hard tail riding seems fun fun fun...and I'm stoked to try anything resembling skate parks, dual(ish) trails, jumps, urban/street etc. this summer!

The HT is just a performance frame, the FS is a Lenz Sport Alpine Brawler

Yah Grange, that sled kicks serious ass. We used to tape flashlights to it and go light sledding. It f-ing rips on ice too. The ice storm we got in 1995 or so was epic, my next door neighbor has this huge steep hill, and we rode the sled down the hill, nailed a snow bank at the bottom, lauched onto the dock, off the dock, and nearly out to the middle of the pond. It was pretty ridiculous, and we were scared shitless. Many fond(and incredibly painful) memories with that sled.

I plan to upgrade the components as I can afford them, XT Crankset, Mavic Crossmax XL or SL Disc wheels, Avid Juicy 7 or Juicy Carbon disc brakes, Thomson carbon fibre seatpost, Easton carbon fibre bars, FSA stem, etc.

Jesus simon........is there anything that bike ISN'T ready for? ;)Haha...I get out into the National Parks around here to ride firetrails, often through the afternoon and then for a few hours into the night, so I like to be prepared. I also have a handlebar mounted GPS unit, so that I can find my way back out after dark when you are not sure where you are and which track to take.

my one and only...

I've been using it to commute to work several days a week. On semi slicks but-of-course. I really need to find an old beater touring bike or a cross bike or something ( a crosscheck would be schweet ) but I havent gotten my shit together to search for an appropriately sized frame to frankenstein together with the leftover parts Ive got lyin around. le sigh. someday...my HT will be soley used for trails.

Let the snickerin begin :) but this is what gets me to and from work most good days....cobbed together and powder coated... an old 81 Voyageur found on ebay....4130 chromoly frame...yes, it's heavy.
Someday, when I grow up, I'll have a bike built for speed but for now I'm happy that pushing all this weight is doing some good.
Nite riding is often required...

Too many bikes to post, but I'll start with my fav. Simonetti something or another. Have had this for 10 years. Easton Elite tubing and a whole mish-mash of unrelated parts: Chorus shifters & deraileurs, Mavic brakes, CaneCreek headset, Stronglight cranks & BB, ChrisKing hubs, Velocity rimjobs, etc. This is the finest bike I've ever ridden, period.
