The Honc/Gonzo/Basom mobile will be departing from San Fran. @ approx. 12:00 friday night...as we search for transport (in our country there is a problem) it would be good to know what sort of restrictions do they have. Do they ever require snow tires or chains on 4WDers?

watersnowdirt
01-05-2005, 08:23 PM
rarely, but based on last weekend, it will be a good idea to have chains even in a 4wd. lph used them on his massive monster 4wd truck. We could have used them on the AWD Audi.

They rarely - very rarely - require them to be put on cars that have 4wd WITH snow tires. At that point, the roads are usually closed anyhow. However, they might ask if you have them - since that is required in certain situations. You can either lie or actually have them. They may search, in which case you'd better have them.

lph can probably give some better insight on this...

If you rent a 4x4 don't bother with chains. 88 will be closed before they require 4x4's with chains.

If it's going off as hard as it could, you might not even be able to travel through the 88. Be in touch w/ CalTRANS; take the 50 if the 88s closed, and the 80 if the 50s closed. If they're all closed...well, you're bummin' man. Good luck.

gonzo....you have my numero, give me a buzz when you land and I can update you on the latest road conditions. also, my offer still stands.

Rent 4wd if you can. I made it through all the checkpoints last weekend in my Outback and they didn't check if I was carrying chains or not. I was cruising around South Lake without them with no problems.

If you can't rent 4wd...then you will definitely, definitely need chains.

edit: me slow...looks like you have 4wd and will be killing it. sweet.

Yo, yo, yo... if we get the storm the you're flying across the country to ski, well, 88 will be closed at the spur. Drive 50 to 89 to 88, thus you won't be shut down by one of the most slide prone sections of highway in America (Carson Spur is a giant slide path).

Just an FYI - my bro Fabio who chefs the Wall Bar says there was a natural slide today on the Spur. I'd definitely be cautious about committing to the 88 if its dumping cause they might be more nervous about things now.

Still trying to decide whether I should leave tomorrow or Sunday. What are you all doing? Looks like Sat will be most likely to close down things on the Mtn.

PS- Your recs re: V-Ex were right on. Skied the Heave over new year's and they killed it. Maybe I'll see you guys this dump at the Wood or Heazy.

Honc - just checked out the Hertz website - an Explorer or Outback would run us $191 from Friday night to Monday night. The Expedition is a lot more and the Sidekick is a lot less. For some reason you can't get them "skierized" which I guess means it comes with a rack...although I wouldn't trust their POS racks with 2 pairs of spats and a new solly deck anyways...

Alex P. Keaton may or may not join us too, depending on our car and his plane situation. If we rent and he comes, it will help to split the costs. Plus I hear he is cute.

Don't know if you've already got some Hertz connects, but I found a few useful links today while I was shopping for a rental. Sorry if this is all old news to you, just thought I'd throw it out there.

If you have AAA you can get some good discounts, just enter a 212 (mid-atlantic region) for the CDP. There are better offers, but AAA offers additional insurance and other stuff.

Dudes,

Definitely program in the two numbers skier666 gave you. you will likely be calling those often, we all do.

Get a 4wd, don't worry about chains. If you come to a checkpoint, don't roll down your window unless asked, just give the guy a nod. that is usually all that is necessary if you are in a 4wd. If he asks about chains, lie, tell him they are stuffed in the back.

if the spur is open (doubtful) take it to kirkwood and sleep in the parking lot for a few hours. if not take greydon's advice and come to SLT via 50 and then go to kirkwood by 89 to 88 over carson pass. If carson pass is closed but kirkwood is open go wait in the line up on the pass for it to open. If the mountain is closed get in touch with one of us, some will likely hit the b/c others may go to heavenly to ski the bottom of the mountain (bottom of heavenly is extremo compared to the bottom of kirkwood ;) ).

gonzo check your pm's.

good luck.

One more number...

The Cohee line: 877 KIRKWOO

And with regards to the Caltrans number, you can punch in the highway number on your keypad. If you speak the numbers you may get 15 instead of 50 and 18/80 instead 88. The voice system is kinda messed up.

The Spur closes a lot. So be prepared to go around.

My friends and I rented an Expedition for 2 weeks in Utah over XMas in 2003, and it's such a gas hog. Bring a lot of bungee cords in different lengths to carry your Spats on the roof. Make sure to bring a large towel to wipe them off - any twin-tip powder ski will collect some road grit. I rented an Outback with three people in Utah (stayed in SLC) and it was tight on the ride to our condo from the airport and back again.

Another tip for getting through chain control:

Here in Southern California they are really anal about making 4WD vehicles show chains at the checkpoints. However, they almost never look inside the boxes. So, before you get to the checkpoint, pick up an empty chain box from the side of the road (people are always driving off leaving the box), and toss it in the back where the officer will be able to see it, but won't be able to touch it.

I spent a whole season driving through checkpoints with the wrong sized chains.

EC'ers, this storm is looking like a repeat of the last big one. if that's the case, i am afraid (anti-jinx) that 80 and/or 50 will most likely be either 1) closed for periods of time fri & sat, and/or 2) clogged w/gapers putting chains on, sliding out, driving 5 mph, etc. in other words: painfully slow.

use those caltrans road numbers to keep updated (though they seem to be real slow updating them, lazy bastards...), and as many have said, i would opt the 80 -> 50 route coming out of SF vs the more slide prone route...

good luck, be safe, and get 'sum...

If 88, 50 & 80 are ALL closed, you MAY be able to get through over 49, Yuba Pass. 80 --> Auburn --> through Downieville --> over Yuba Pass --> 89 --> Sierraville --> Truckee. I did that way once, took me almost 18 hours from the bay to my front door. It was the only road open and a line of cars was following a snowplow over the summit at 5 mph, none of us daring to pass. Far from the best option but may be the only option if this thing really pounds hard. Good Luck!

that's committment! i would avoid 49, that is one slow windy road in the best conditions, especially from downieville to truckee...surely that section will be essentially impassable during this blizzard?

Some further advice:

While the SoCal chapter of CHP and Caltrans are nazis about chains, their Northern brethren are not. In other words, if you have 4wd w/ snow tires you won't get checked for chains. Just flash them 4 fingers and they'll wave you through. SoCal was a different story. I even got turned back once down there.

And while the Schlitz is a great idea, DO NOT HAVE OPEN ALCOHOL CONTAINERS IN YOUR CAR IN CALIFORNIA. I can't stress this enough. If you do choose to take a chance, be mindful to conceal them.

A very very good point! The police here will nail you if they see an open container whether you've been drinking from it or not.

I buzzed through all chain check points during the last storm in my rented Subie. Had no chains or snow tires, just did the "4 fingers" flash as Arty suggested. Didn't have a problem at the Oregon boarder either on the way back as most everything else was pulling off to chain up.

and i'm probably stating the obvious, but it's possible out of towners may not know this...

North Lake Tahoe and South Lake Tahoe are two very distinct places. They are far from each other, especially during a snowstorm. I'm not sure about the East side of the lake, but during a storm, you will NOT be able to get from North to South Lake (and vice versa) via the West shore.

Keep that in mind while planning.

Thanks so much for all the info and offers guys. Sadly, Honc got the corporate cock-shafting and has to be in LA at 7:00 am Monday. It told him he should quit. He said he would think about it.

The new retard-mobile crew is basom, mildbill, Alex P. Keaton, and gonzo. We will be in a expedition, hopefully with chains on it, which will contains 4 retards, far too many skis, one snowboard, one pair of snowshoes, water, gas, a whisperlite, white gas, mac and cheese, stinky green, sleeping bags, avie gear, two iPods with car connectors (in case one breaks), one mini-dv camera, one helmet cam, at least one digi cam, and an inflatible fuck-pig. Departing oakland at about 12:15 am and getting where ever the fuck we can get.

I think we have most people's phone numbers. Tthis should be interesting. If you can think of anything else we should bring (besides lube - we thought of that) please chime in. Hopefully our planes will land. Basom is so ready to kill it, it's not even funny.

Morning update from elevation 6300' = heavy heavy snow. Repeat of last wekened this time when seeing across the parking lot was an impossibility. Radar is sold green and yellow all the way offshore.

Caltrans says:

[IN THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY & SIERRA NEVADA]
CHAINS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES EXCEPT 4-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES WITH SNOW
TIRES ON ALL 4 WHEELS FROM 3 MI EAST OF GOLD RUN (PLACER CO) TO THE NEVADA
STATE LINE

EASTBOUND TRUCKS ARE BEING SCREENED AT APPLEGATE (PLACER CO) - DRIVERS MUST
HAVE MAXIMUM CHAINS IN THEIR POSSESSION IN ORDER TO PROCEED - PERMIT LOADS ARE
PROHIBITED

WESTBOUND TRUCKS ARE BEING SCREENED 5 MI WEST OF RENO (WASHOE CO) - DRIVERS
MUST HAVE MAXIMUM CHAINS IN THEIR POSSESSION IN ORDER TO PROCEED - PERMIT LOADS

So no real restrictions on passenger cars yet. As hardrider says, it has begun. (But why must he keep shooting his dog?)

Doubt it would come with chains. I don't think the rental agencies like them cuz they can mess up the car if put on wrong. Not as much as sliding off an embankment, though.

When I picked up the rental in Spokane for the BC Summit, I had to drive back and ask for an ice scraper!!

The only chains these guys are in gettin in Folsom is if they get locked up in Folsom State somehow on their way through....[/cue Johnny Cash]

Actually, I might have chains already sittin around that fit. I used to have a Pathfinder...when I sold it, I kept the chains just so I had them to throw in the back of the Subie if I ever got asked if I was carrying them. I never, never have to throw them on (even in last weekends monster), but just use 'em to get through checkpoints. I wonder if they would fit the Exped? Even if not, you can just carry them around in case you get asked if you are carrying them at a checkpoint. Usually, they just nod and let you through, but ya never know...

However, if you actually do want chains for actual use, drop me a PM, and I can grab some today...cost + 80% special just for you guys. :D

hertz doesn't do chains or snowtires. and they are fucking us a bit on mileage too since all of their big rigs are being taken, which sucks. but since we are going where 5 to 8 feet of snow may fall, you could tell me that you were going to put my balls in a blender and i wouldn't get that bummed out.

i will get chains here in chi-town for the rig today. what info do you need for that? tire size?

Yo, yo, yo… check tirechains.com, but I think the links for a Ford Exploder will be hella bling. See if you can return them if they go unused (probable).

I think me and the Monster Dump plan leaving the Bay around 4AM, we should be hitting Hwy 50 before the Saco JONGS, thus avoiding the inevitable road closure.

Back-up plans… if the road to Kirkwood is closed I’m going to jump out of a moving car at the top of Luther Pass and slay some 25 degree pow, if Echo Summit is closed SAT should be a nice place to ski, if SAT is closed meet at Tyrone’s for Omelets and then we’ll do lunch at Centerfolds in Sac.

It would be more fun if you bought them in Boston and packed them in your carryon and then tried to convince the security people that you absolutely needed to have them on your carryon cuz you can't risk having your luggage lost and being without them when you land in wherever you're flying into.

That seemed a lot funnier before I typed it. I'll shut up now. Have fun!

If you do get an SUV, make sure it isn't a 2wd version. This happened to me in Portland. On the way up to Meadows conditions were getting dicey, went to pop it in 4wd and there weren't any buttons, shifters anything. Pulled over, looked underneath, no front drive axle. Made it up the hill, barely.

SAT = Sierra At Tahoe. It is a small ski hill on hwy 50—west of Echo Summit, pre-Tahoe—that is popular with central valley snowboarders. (Who rock, exclusively, t-bolted decks, baseless bindings and extra-extra large Fuct jeans over their snow pants. Think BC Rider circa ’91). Not a bad place, but not what you’re flying across the country to ski.

Speaking of lunch, I’m off to Marmot Mountain Work to get my boots fixed, I can’t handle another pow-day on 2 buckle T-1s.

I'm willing to bet my left testicle that the Wood won't open tomorrow. It's absolutely puking right now and the winds are insane. However...

The Heav was $$$$$$ today. The top was closed, but the lower mountain was sweet. Consistent knee deep pow at the top of the Gunbarrel/Tram area. A bit thin lower down, but still creamy. Toss another couple of feet in there and it's gonna be deeeeep.

As for the Wood, Sunday is showing some potential. If it does open... I'm not gonna say another word.

After leaving SF around 4 in the morning, they got stuck in Pollock Pines in the foothills for a coupla hours and then bagged it. We just called CalTrans and 50 is still closed there at 12:20 PM. Never in my 4 years of living here have I heard of people not being able to get into the mountains for the entire day. Friggin crazy.

I sacked out at the LakeShore in SLT wating for 4-5 days in '97, hanging at the gate all day everyday til they called it to get ten feet of unskied pow when it popped. Worth every penny.

Sweet Mary Mother of Jesus!!!

I am still speechless. As Mrs. Shoe can tell you; Arty and I couldn't talk therefore we were hooping and hollering and thats about all we could manage.

This was definitely a Heavenly storm, when the Wood reported 24" the Heave reported 36-48" and they weren't lying. Arty and I lapped and lapped and lapped Avalanche Bowl off gunbarrel all day. We hiked to Little Slide in Avie Bowl at least 5 times. Why did we hike on a such a huge day???? Because a short 15 minute hike led to CHEST DEEP untracked snow! Face shots don't begin to describe the turns, it was CHOKINGLY DEEP, first time in Tahoe I have had to watch when I took a breath. It was way way overhead and it just kept getting deeper. When I picked up Arty this morning his road had just been plowed and his driveway was clear. When I dropped him off this afternoon, my GMC sierra 2500 got stuck in his driveway.

As 666 said, the sustained pitch of Lower California side of Heavenly is amazing, the trees are incredible. On every run we skied right onto the road at the bottom then to the chair, never did we ski on an actual run.

Arty got some $$$$$$$$$$$ pics with his new camera.

Met up with gimpy, kellie and hop when they arrived at about noon, gimpy led a hike, I couldn't hang so i skied down to pick up Arty who had been inside buying new goggles. Never saw those guys again, but I am sure gimpy showed them the goods.

Time for a hot tub and a beer. :D

666 I think Arty is probably working to get these pics ASAP. Just from the quick glance i saw he has about 10-20 money shots. I haven't looked at the video I shot but i had a problem with visibility and condensation on the lens, so i doubt it will be worthwhile.

I shot a couple of stills of him from behind, unfortunately he isn't actually visible in any of the pics due to the blower pow he left in his wake. ;)

Dudes, I tried... hard. 4AM the alarm goes off, out the door at 4:30, in Plaserville at 6:15ish... 50 is closed, fuck. Breakfast at Denny's, 50 still closed but supposed to open at 8:30... BANGER! Drive up the hill, chain up, hit Poluck Pines at 8:31, 50 is closed. Fuck. Chill in the parking lot of Safeway, shit at Taco Bell, read a tabloid and make out with my partner in crime AKA Split-Hippy. At 10:49 one of us gets a hard-on, rather than explain the pocket rocket we retreat to west bound 50 (at CalTrans' suggestion). We contemplate reentering the que on 50, but realize we have been bested and make trails to Camp Tyronne where we drink Turkish coffee and debate the cock sucking of various Bulgarian porn-starlettes. I'm living vicariously through Tahoe, and as all of you know, there's more to life during a huge storm than skiing. For me at least, the lifestyle-type shots get me just as stoked. Simply seeing snow falling or a driveway with 6 foot banks or buried cars is amazing to me. Thanks. :D

I made it up to Heavenly today. Nevada side (Stagecoach and North Bowl.) 2-3 ft. of fresh. They even opened Olympic chair for a couple of hours. I know that it isn't that steep there (steep was needed for the snow depth.) However, it did provide access to Western Perimeter (inbounds.) Western Perimeter was amazing. Deep and untracked. The rock piles between the trees were inviting soft pillows of pow. It was fun to float down with the brief moments of slough. I didn't cross any other tracks until close to 2:00.

I returned home to 2 feet of fresh on a 1 and 1/2 foot base. I might just ski my yard tomorrow. :D

Nice...super stoked you got Tahoe on a sick day...and have stories for the crew at home.

On another note...I just drove from SF to South Lake in about 3 hours...Yep...3 hours. No traffic with dry roads all the way to Sly Park Road. Rain until Strawberry and then driving on snow at Twin Bridges to Meyers. Over Echo Summit @ 7:00 pm it was dumping...it may be wet, but they are getting snow. Meyers it was a rain/snow mix, mostly rain. At my house in South Lake, not doing anything at all, except a few rain drops.

I will attempt to hit Kirkwood the next two days, may even buy a Heavenly pass if need be due to whether in the next few days.

My God, I don't even know where to begin. Yesterday was the best day of my life. Except the day before, or maybe the day before that. It still feels like a dream. Once I make sense of it in my head I'll elaborate. KT was the best it's ever been in my 5 seasons at Squaw. Our first run down chute 75 defies description. I think I made 10 turns down the whole thing, crossed maybe one patroller track the entire way. Ab-so-lutey insane.

Sunday was a strange day at Sierra. 50 opened at 10 am and when we got there a bit before 11 there were fewer than 100 cars in the parking lot. I doubt more than 200 cars showed up throughout the day. The snow didn't ski as deep as the 5-6 feet they got, in some places a windpack layer was only 6 inches down, but mostly it was knee deep and sometimes bottomless. It was snowing pretty hard and felt like a ghost town. Eventally I was crossing a few tracks in the trees but I rarely saw anyone else until the bottom of the runs. And then, around 2, the falling snow turned to ... not snow. And the fluffy powder turned to ... something else, heavier and noisier. After a few more runs we finally accepted the harsh reality: we were being rained on, top (of West Bowl) to bottom, and the powder had turned to glop with a light rain crust, so we put our wet asses into the heated seats and drove home, rain over Echo Summit and everywhere in Tahoe. Of course when it was time to head back to the bay later that night it was snowing over Echo Summit again ... Kirkwood probably got mostly or all snow. Tues-Wednesday should be good days.

KW was very very nice today. Very Baker-esque (that's for you hardrider), super smooth and velvety dense stuff. Followed 666 down the Jim's... we probably made 10-15 turns from the top to the cat-track -warp speed now captain!
It got a bit chunky and hard once it was cut up so we ventured farther afield to stay in the smooth stuff, scoring down the Sisters and Norm's Nose. Vis was hit and miss most of the day with chair 10 going on wind hold (with us on it just below the top...my favorite part of the day) at around 1230? We called "over it" and bailed at 1330.

It was still puking when we left, so tomorrow should be UltraKickassRadness.

You're lucky. You work in a smallish not-very-corporate office compared to mine. NO FAIR. My boss did the Lumberg thing today - literally - and said, "We need you to help Mr. X out on a project for a couple days, okay?" as he looked at me with beaty eyes (I think he's been smoking too many cigarettes). He seemed relentless, like it was an important job, as if to say, "I KNOW you'll want to leave to go skiing on Wednesday, and this should keep you here." I think I'm feeling sick. I should have never told anyone I picked up this sport.

we had an epic trip, and my mind is such a piece of shit right now i'm not going to attempt a TR. if i did i'm sure justice would not be done.

all i can say is that my decision to pull the trigger on this one and roll the dice was the best one i've made in at least five years. everything worked out, everything. (except making it down to SLT and the wood, but after the day we had at squaw on sunday and the hopes of more terrain openings on monday we felt it would be just stupid to drive five hours to a possibly closed road. and of course we were rewarded with Granite chief oh yeah)

good to meet and ski with you for a bit alka. and lane, what more can i say...... you and rob are the meng. we had a seriously good time with you guys.

3:30 pm Friday - Arrive at airport 3 hours early. Nervous that flight may not get out. Hopefully all will be well with me and the others.

6:38 pm -Hour 3- - On the plane. "Indefinite delay" to get to San Francisco due to weather. Fuck fuck fuck.

7:00 pm - Drinking at airport bar. Told to check in at 7:30 at gate to check on weather hold. APK is on his flight and Basom and Bill were getting on when I was getting off. Snuck a peak at the monitor at the gate - looked like 52 mph winds in S.F. So close…

7:30 pm - Hour 4- Now I am suspecting a conspiracy. There were only a few people on the flight and there is another one at 9:15. I bet those fuckers bumped us to save a buck. All Southwest flights to Vegas and Oakland are cancelled. They must be conspiring too…

7:45 pm - Just announced an 8:40 take off. We'll see. I have a deep, searing hatred for these fuckers. Thank god David Spade's new sitcom is on the airport TV's to distract me. It, too, is awful. Sidenote: there is a cross-dresser sitting a few rows wearing a English romantic-era bonnet and corset.

8:30 pm - Hour 5 - Back on the plane. Captain Asshole just announced our "wheels up" time to be 9:47 pm, landing time to be a little past midnight. 3 hour delay. We'll see. This means APK will be in San Fran. for approximately 4 hours han solo. He'll be psyched.

1:10 am EST Saturday - Hour 10 - En route on the plane. Forced myself to get some sleep. Going to be a long night.

12:20 am PST - Hour 11 - Finally landed, found AKP in baggage claim, picked up Expedition. The thing is sick. Leather interior, navigation system, back seats that recline, etc…but no tape deck, which is a chafe for iPod compatibility. Later find that Basom has an iTrip, but only his iPod will work...which means we will be forced to listen to They Might Be Giants and The Crash Test Dummies all trip. Pick Basom and Bill up in Oakland @ 2:45. They are looking autumn-harvest-steezariffic. Totally sickbird. On road at 2:50 am.

5:45 am - Hour 16 - In 24 hour Safeway parking lot, Pollock Pines, CA. Rt. 50 is closed until 10:00 am, or so they say. Everyone we meet is jacked up on crystal meth. A really nice man asked us for a ride to Tahoe. Unfortunately we don't have enough room for him. He seems really nice though.

9:30 am -Hour 20 - Pollock Pines is starting to get really jammed up. We hop out of "line" and do some exploring/4 wheeling. The town is nearly over run with people trying to get to ski.

10:00 am - After working our way back into a good spot, Cpt. Farva of the Pollock Pines PD (no joke - that was his name) shows up and starts telling people to get the fuck out of town, go west and go home. Apparently 50 is not going to open for a long time. Avy control and clean-up still pending. We decide to head back down to Placerville and develop a plan. No one else we can think to call has any ideas.

10:15 am - Heading back down to Placerville, twisting one up, we get the call from Arty that 80 is open. We haul ass down, north up 49 to 80.

11:30 am - Hour 22 - Nearly stop to ski the resort up top of Donner Pass. Sugarbowl? Wind is honking and snow is coming down hard. Decide to head all the way down to avoid getting caught out of Tahoe again.

1:15 pm - Hour 24 - Nearly 13 hours after getting in the car and, for APK, 27 hours after starting to travel, we roll into the Homewood parking lot in north lake. Decided on Homewood because of the sheltered terrain from the howling wind. Turns out Squaw shut down at 1:00 and Alpine only opened minimally, so Homewood was a good call for some afternoon laps. Head over to elf-land or something like that to ski some trees. The snow is DEEP. Dense so you don't sink to your waist with your skis or board on, but you would if you took them off. Soft and light enough to go overhead if you lay a turn into it, but firm and bouncy enough to make it really fun to bomb around in. Great for landing. Homewood has lots of gullys with big ass trees and fun little shots. We good get laps in to warm up to the snow, knowing that the next two days are going to be sick sick sick.

[Sidenote: I can't explain to you how much snow there is up there, or how hard it snow the whole fucking time we were there. By the end of the trip we were nearly numb to it, but inevitably driving around every 15 minutes one of us would declare how insane the 15 foot piles of snow on the side of the road were or how hard it was 'gurging and had been since we got there. So, so much fucking snow, so much coverage, and so deep. Keep in mind that every minute we were on the mountain, it was full on spackling snow. We were soaked the whole time.]

4:00 pm - Hour 27 - Hook up with some of my buddies from college - they have a pretty full house so we end up as gracious guests of Lane Meyer, one of my older brother's buddies from college. Lane and his room mate Rob are fired up to ski the next day, as are we. And we are fucking tired, since we have been up for over well 30 hours at this point. Chow some pizza and pass out hard to Hot Dog.

7:00 am Sunday - Hour 40 - Blue bird. Squaw is saying they will be opening upper mountain. At this point it is unclear how much snow they have gotten - multiple feet - but it is sure to be good, since it has been yaking hard all night and forever before that. So fired up. Bomb to Squaw with Lane leading the way. Turns out blue skies were just suckering us out of bed, but oh well. It will be sick. Gear up to the sounds of bombs on the hill (which didn't stop once all day Sunday and Monday) and hop into line at KT-22 at around 7:45. Alkasqualik and Co. are a few ahead of us - we're about chair 10 - Ingrid Backstrom, Rob Gaffney, JT Holmes, etc. all in line. Shit gets pushy in line and nearly a fight. People are fired up to get on the snow. The Fingers look down at us, untracked…

01-11-2005, 08:50 AM
9:00 am - Hour 42 - I end up riding up my first lift ever at Squaw sitting next to Ingrid Backstrom looking at the Fingers and everything else buried in 2 to 3 feet of freshy, bouncy, soft Tahoe powder. I have no idea where to go. Blown away by the available terrain. We just follow Lane and his buddies. HOLY FUCKING SHIT. First run, first tracks on Chute 75. For those of you that don't know it, it comes straight off the top of KT-22 and is somewhere between 1600 and 1800 of perfectly sustained 35 to 42ish degree slope, approx 50 feet wide. We bomb it. Lane pops the cherry. Maybe 25 full size, bottomless, perfect GS turns maching full speed top to bottom. I like Squaw Valley. Holy fucking shit. We all agree had that run been the only one of the trip, it would have been worth it. I would gladly travel 24 hours for that run again. Lane says it was his best run in 5 years at Squaw. Luckily, there was more. KT-22 blew our minds. So, so much sick terrain served from that lift. We did our best to keep up with Lane and Co. Dead Tree, Rock Garden…short traverses left, right, out, back, all over yield sick steep shots with cool terrain features to be found all the way down. I keep thinking how awesome local knowledge of that hill would be on a day like today. The cliffs at Squaw are not sheer and often require a good about of horizontal distance to reach the landing, so you can't really roll up, scope the landing and drop. You need to know what you are going to hit and where it is…and if you do, you are fucking psyched because there is so much air to be had at Squaw. Hook up with Alka and his buddy George and a girl they were riding with. They are all fucking sick. Head over to Adrenaline Rock from Cornice 2 chair. Lane shoots the chute and stomps it clean. I follow and triple tomahawk down the apron. Sweet. Turn around to see Alka billygoating up to something that does not appear to be skiable. Turns out it was - sick double stager. His buddy George does the same and hits another line of the same sickness. Then this girl they are skiing with (who we later find out is in high school) who is maybe 5 foot 1, 110 pounds lines up her shot. This girl stomped a triple stage 60 foot line. Really really smooth. We would all like to know her name for future reference. She rips. The rest of the day is filled with more of the same. Sick lines, fun drops, awesome terrain. Mildbill wins the Sickbird award of the day for his quad-twisting double release tomahawk. Ben rocks all day on his new knee and APK bombs maching GS turns all over everything. Bill hates the spatulas for not having enough tip to land on (they look pretty small on a 250 lb 6-5 dude) but he'll give them another shot.

2:00 pm - Hour 47 - Spent after a long day, we get a beer at the Chamois to figure out what our next move is. Still nuking snow. We all really want to make it to South Lake, but after some research find that the road to the Weed from South Lake is still closed and it would take several hours to get down there…and upper Squaw may open tomorrow….and we are fucking spent. End up making the call to stay up north and hit Squaw again.

4:00 pm - Hour 49 - Maxin' and relaxin' with Lane and friends. Basom gets wasted, I get wasted, Bill tries to get wasted but he is too big. Eats 7 7-11 burgers instead and scares some people who may or may not have liked meat. Hookas are smoked. We all pass out on floors and couches as the night wares on…tomorrow shall be good. And not crowded. We have no one to ski with but we feel like we can probably find our way to some goods after the amazing tour by Lane and his buds.

7:00 am Monday - Hour 64 - Stopped snowing and has warmed up a bit. We down 7-11 burritos and head to the hill. We hop in first in line at KT-22. Headwall and Granite Chief are on hold and will hopefully be opening. Basom and I get first chair. Fingers have filled in. The terrain continues to blow us away. We head straight to Chute 75 again. First tracks. Again. Basom gets Sickbird for the day for stopping mid-cherry pop to take some pictures of us as we mach by. Snow down low is a bit wet, but still fun. We run another lap to lookers left. So much fun terrain. Fun airs had. Great turns made. Bill loves it on his Spats. They are really made for the heavier Squaw snow - they are like skimmers on top of that stuff. The spat riders (and there are many) are seen maching around the hill everywhere at Squaw, nuking through everything…

10:00 am - Hour 67 - We decide to take a ride up the gondola to see if the snow is drier up top and hopefully catch Granite Chief when it opens. Basom ends up running into his buddy Stan from college. Stan has skied and lived at/near Squaw for three years and is with all of his buddies. We decide to follow them…good call. Head over to Broken Arrow, hike up and get into some great chutes, fun drops, awesome snow, and a killer wind lip. We run another lap. So, so good. Great pitch. Then we see Granite has opened. We bomb over and find a bit of a line, but not much, considering it hasn't been open since at least 8 feet ago. The ride up blows our already blown minds. More great terrain in all directions. Squaw really is Squallywood - I swear you can see every line on the mountain from a lift. And there are so many lines. Super technical lines in every direction and they are getting hit, getting dropped and getting stuck. Really cool to see. Several times riding the lift I would see some dude across the valley picking his way down to some sick exposed cliff and convince myself he is a gape and is going to get cliffed out our get worked. Then they point 'em and hit a double stager I didn't even think about and stomp it clean. And I feel shame. We follow Stan and Co. down more sweet pitches, fun drops, and sick terrain. So so so much fun. Line gets to us after a few laps so we head back to Broken Arrow to burn another, then back to Granite for more. We end up splitting up with Stan and Basom calls it to end on a good note with the new knee. Bill, APK and I burn two more down some fun terrain at Granite (at this point we can barely make turns) and head to Broken Arrow for another run down to the bottom. It is super good. Mashed potatoes at the bottom, but still damn good…

2:30 pm - Hour 73 - Beers and meatballs at the Chamois. Hoping to get snowed in…another 3 feet expected tonight. Looks like the roads are clear and responsibility kicks in. Bill stays behind and APK, Basom and I get gear up to go.

9:00 pm - Hour 80 - In-and-Out mawed on the way back to San Fran…so so glad the trip was made. So many good turns made, good folks met, and good times had. Tahoe kicks ass.

11:30 pm Monday night - Hour 82 - Red-eye back to Chicago 90 hours later. Spent and happy. So glad the trigger was pulled.

6:00 am CST Tuesday morning - Hour 86 - Back in Chicago. 2 hours of sleep in bed before rallying to class…so spent, but so content.

86 hours, 633 miles on the rental car, and hundreds of perfect turns and drops later, it is all said and done. Thanks so much for all of the hospitality, offers of floor space and advice from everyone here. This was definitely one the best trips I have ever been on. Storm chasing with minimal planning and room on a credit card is highly advisable…especially when Tahoe has gotten nearly 200 inches…and Mildbill, Basom, and APK are going to go with you. The trip only would have been better if Honc had not been forced to smell the corporate glove all weekend….

I'm not gonna bother to comment on anything that Gonzo wrote up above - fucking killer writeup man. So great to meet you guys, show you around, and share some Tahoe love at Squallywood. Come back anytime.

So I'll pick up where you guys left off.

January 10th - 05:00 PM - I return home from "work" to find Bill deeply involved in some heavy-duty Law and Order watching on my couch. He looks w-i-p-e-d out. He shares stories of you guys' last day on the hill which make me second guess my decision to tie one on Sunday night since I'd be at work Monday am, but such is the lift of a semi-serious ski bum.

06:00 PM - Calls sent out to people in the 'Hood about burgers at Cottonwood are returned with answers of "nah, we're hunkered down"/"Nope, still shoveling out, we had to crawl in through our kitchen window"/etc. Instead, we accept an offer from my friends down the street to walk down and eat some green curry. Somehow, several glasses of Johnnie Walker Black later, we agree with my friends that the snow "24" is worth watching. Tw hours of my life later (which I can never get back, by the way), it's 10 PM and we're exhausted, so we crash out.

January 11th - 06:30 AM - Woke up to another 6-8 inches of light fluff in Truckee, snowing lightly outside. Anticipating a ride to Squaw from Rob (my roommate), Mildbill was already up and dressed and ready to step out the door. I've been up for the last hour and a half, rehearsing in my head what I'm going to say to my boss to try and get tomorrow off. The forecast calls for continuing heavy snow all day, but inexplicably, the skies over the Martis Valley are clearing. Winds at the mountain are light, overnight snowfall is deep (14-18 there), and crowds are non-existant. And I came to work. I rolled the dice and hoped that the forecast and radar, which show a HUGE blob of yellow parked over the Central Valley, are correct. Tomorrow should still be the day. Fingers crossed.

08:15 AM - Yet today is still poised, for those who are out, to rank in the "high-lifetime days lists" of everyone out wallowing in face shots and buttering high-speed arcs. Bill must be so stoked right now. I just called Cody, who is in line at KT and in position for third chair. What will he drop? Box chute? Main air? Coleman's to the middle knuckle? Anything seems possible into 18" of Alta-style blower. Doubt begins to crash in - should I be there today? Will this ever happen again this year? What if this is it? I'm placing my faith in the radar. She blinded me with science, right?

now, i am kicking myself for not going up last night to hit it today....after reading posts like this, seeing all the $, sweat, toil and effort peeps put in to hit a blower day in Tahoe...well, makes me feel spoiled and shamed for not hitting every storm....

Plan is to slay it tomorrow (providing I didn't totally screw up my call of Wed being "the day", and in fact, today becomes "the day" and they pop everything @ Alpine...)

But I digress...again, great TR, nice work lads!

Tuesday January 11th - 18:34 PM PST - I just got back home from Squaw. Remember how I said "Wednesday will be 'the day'?" Well, I WAS WRONG. Today was the day. Everything went, save for Silverado, the Palisades, and the Pocket. I owe absolutely everything to my boss, Pat, who was ridiculously sympathetic to my request to have tomorrow off. He was so sympathetic to it, in fact, that he told me to take this afternoon off too.

I left work at noon, hammered over to Squaw in broken clouds that turned back into dumping snow by the time I made it to the Valley. I parked, jumped into my gear, and headed straight for the Funitel to Headwall scramble. Somehwere around the middle of broken arrow, I saw that they had vegunb to load Headwall. I called Cody, heard he was dicking around in the woods filming, so I was on my own. Ran into Doughboy immediately, and hit Slot to lower Light Towers, then lapped CII a couple times until we heard that Granite was about to go. Made it over there, and immediately lost Dopughboy somewhere in Corkscrew around Chamber Cliff, which I think he sent from the top.

The snow over there was insanely deep. Again, I was on spatulas, but I was getting full on face shots. To quote The Scientist, "Light, deep....and an absolute utopia." The clouds were breaking, the winds were light to moderate, and NO ONE WAS OUT. Managed to meet up with Bill, who was still killing it despite doing so for about 4 hours on his own. He was stoked to have some local guidage, so we sessioned the best that Granite has to offer. Way to go Bill, bell to bell like a rock star.

For whatever reason, I seemed to respond to a new-found vigor to hurl myself off of rocks with an unhealthy reaction of not being able to stomp anything, but in 15 feet of snow, it sure as hell didn't matter. I was pinballing and cartwheeling down everything, and met with only hoots and hollers from myself and lookers-on.

We bailed and did a Broken Arrow/Tower 16 to Headwall, and then got to play on some of the rocks in CII bowl before heading to Balboa for burgers and PBRs, which Bill graciously bought (thanks mang!).

All in all, today was the day, and one last Beantown Maggot got to enjoy it in full-force. I don't think I've ever seen a quiet guy have a shit eater plastered on his face for so long.

So now you guys know how things go down on the north shore of Tahoe, so stoked for you and glad to have taken part in the insanity. As I said before, come back anytime.

To all y'all EC boys-

Thank you. Seriously, thank you. As we were sitting around having beers in the Chamoix, all I could think about was the unbelievable stoke that skiing brings to people. Skiing brings so much stoke, that a bunch a lunatics from all around the country, all with the same passion, randomly meet up, and chase the dream. So sick.

All in all it was good meeting you peeps and you're welcome back to Squaw any friggin time.

Regarding Today-
Third chair, middle knuckle, tits deep, so sick.
Then I went to work. Oh yeah, work was actually fun as hell. It consisted of shooting nipple deep pow in the trees in and out of bounds around Squaw with my heroes. Work did not suck.

Oh yeah, and that 17 year old girl was Michelle Parker. She's a jibber who's been following me and George around, learning the big mountain ropes. She'll be the best skier in the world in...I'd say 3 years.

I was in the KT line at about 8:45 and got back to my car about 3. 5th day straight, I'm exhausted but still grinning! Scored fresh on KT, Broken Arrow, had an amazing reverse traverse run down the slot before the HW lift opened then scored unbelievably deep turns on the Chief. Today was most definitely the day! Heard 'em blasting as I was loading the Spatulas in the car. Silverado tomorrow?

Silverado tomorrow?

Siverado hasn't opened yet? holy crap..that place is gonna be insane with all this snow. Silverado is like it's own experts only mini-resort.

yes and yes. the stoke radiation was severe that day. people just feeding off each other.

i talked to bill as he was headed over to granite to meet up with lane and he was trying his hardest to contain himself. it was obvious he didn't want me to know how good it was, and it was nice of him not to rub it in. glad you got the afternoon lane.

the one thing about visiting squaw during the biggest snowfall since 1916 is it pretty much guarantees that you rearange your life in order to move there.

Quite the turn around for bill, eh? From not going at all, to staying there indefinitely. How'd he swing that?

Kudos all around.

Sick and ashamed and happy (and sign me up for the next one),

It's stories like this that got me to move out to Squaw 10 years ago. This thread is awesome and it really takes me back. There's nothing like riding up KT on a big day - or any chair on that mountain for that matter. Squaw is an amazing place. So glad to see you guys living it up out there.

I don't think I've ever seen a quiet guy have a shit eater plastered on his face for so long.

I thought it was called a goatee, but me neither.

Stoked that Tuesday went off and that Lane and Billy killed it. It would have been nice to get stranded for another day, but we would have lost precision points and the feeling of a plan perfectly executed is satisfying in and of itself. Honestagawd, if my tuition was refundable I'd still be out there.

Totally fucking sickbird.
