I saw this picture in another thread:
http://www.pawprince.com/pawprince/photos/PS_WebGlry/images/01_0005.jpg
and i like it a lot. Does anybody else have pictures from the top, looking down? I love pics like this, because then i can imagine what it would be like to ski the run myself, instead of watching some other guy ski it. (not that those aren't cool too).

This was the first day that the Aiguille du Midi was open, with the exit tunnel not quite clear of snow and ice. The only people up here were sightseeing tourists and skiers who, with their guides, would rope down the trecherous Arete knife edge to a safe spot and put on their skis.

.....then the unfortunate happens as LITT runs away and comes to a rest in a shadowy section to the left of your screen, which was a hidden crevasse.

Sure. let me give you my credit card number, expiration date, three-digit security code and SSN while I'm at it.
When Scot showed me the top of Les Grand Montets he wanted to ski into, I really didn't wanna have anything to do with it. It just looked too nasty. But Scot Schmidt is one of the world's best extreme skiers, so you have to trust him.

Ohau, NZ Hemi's Bowl skiers right on the high side of righteousness. Tony leading straight to Heaven. He had gone down to the cliff and had to hike back up. Kreitler (https://www.tetongravity.com/kreitler.html ) did it in THE CONTINUUM
My meisly track is the rock hopper in the bowl. Tony in the pic also did the chute (center of the photo) that was an arm width wide for 50 + feet. That kid was so righteous... he now works in India for Jesus. He has a Mission and saves the needy and magot infested sick. Crazy Kiwi

try to get them back up in a bit....
Should be fixed now... Never had much luck from the top of the Aig. Rouge... it was closed most of the time, and when open was packed (on the varet) and cloudy. Mid-station has some nice stashes, however :) (As long as you kept away from the lanches, flying km and lower end of robert-blanc) The ridge from dou de l'homme -> lanches and coming off the end of that ridge are good though... It's the lee side so catches all the windblown basically from the Aig. Grive round (even if it's a bit heavy) and sloughs off nicely...

Thanks for that edg....forgot my manners, as well as how to link pics, last time!
Yeah, got quite lucky as was there for a month (feb->mar) and it coincided with some good snow snow made for some interesting skiing as it was my first visit to the area. Plus one of my best friends spent 5 seasons there so had the skinny on where to look for some nice stuff elsewhere in the area
Don't rate the link to La Plagne though - takes soooooo long to get over, it hardly seems worth it!

I was surprised at the snow too - was there in April and not only was there powder but pretty much daily refills. Main problems were the crowds (both on and [not too far] off piste) and the temperatures - the snow lower down (~1800m) was getting soft really quickly - which lead to some rather painful head plants when transferring for plowed to unplowed (there isn't much resistance held up by a tele binding if your skis come to a grinding hault :D). Good times none-the-less.
Tries the La Plagne link once, and it did take forever. There seem to be some good stuff over there if you're staying that side, but the sun tends to beat your to it, and if you're going over from Les Arcs just too much damned effort.
And no problem! :)

True. I was first thinking 'yeah, looks like a nice lil' one to do'...obvioysly not.
Roo - you've prolly seen both this one and TrifideIII in LaGrave in nature? How does that Mammoth shoot compare to the III?(not that I'm going to jump it though...:) And PS. the good news is that I'm most likely going to visit LG again this year...but more on that later in the Summit part of the forum...)
bad_roo
11-26-2004, 07:27 AM
I'd say the Mammoth air is bigger but the consequences in TrifidesIII are a bit more serious. I've never had the conditions/local knowledge at the time/testicular girth to hit either of them though. ;)
Hugh Jass
11-26-2004, 07:43 AM
Laurel Mtn. - right? I thought that was the Pinner Couloir - but then again, I don't really know the names other than what I've read on boards and books. Here's a shot taken in September last year looking up from the bottom. Notice the same red stone arch on the right side of the pic.
Yep. I've heard it alternately referred to as the Pencil and the Pinner. Just like the Mendenhall over to the right, the Pinner/Pencil is rarely in condition, and climbing from the bottom is highly recommended.
Jiehkevarri

Yeah, the rock gap you absolutely HAVE to clear in Trifides...
I've seen couple of 'big boys' hit it...a border and two skiers...the boarder cleared the gap, just slightly, had a nice grab in the air and did just a small butt check and continued like that was his regular warm up run :) ...the skiers on the other hand went huuuge but splashed also as huge.
Those guys are very good skiers and the other one complained even couple of years later that he still have to pay some dues (I guess back problems) for that (mentioned) huck and the yardsale after it!
Thanks for the answer by the way...I just wanted some comparison, cause I've always wondered how would the trifidesIII look on the inrun of the drop...and how would I feel there if I would be crazy enough to try that sucka...(not very likely at all but still sometimes it's nice to play some mind games:))

[QUOTE=Superstar Punani]This was the first day that the Aiguille du Midi was open, with the exit tunnel not quite clear of snow and ice. The only people up here were sightseeing tourists and skiers who, with their guides, would rope down the trecherous Arete knife edge to a safe spot and put on their skis.
It's crazy, I have a shot looking up from the bottom of the Arete. It looks like cake. However, I remember when I got down my hand was frozen from hanging on to the rope so tightly.
I'll have to get a scan of the "Zone tres Dangerous" knife edge from LGM. That scared me poopless.

Good to see you still posting Huckstix.
I am going to share two more of Huckstix helmut cam pictures. Not sure if "Entrance Thread" means "entering" huge hucks.....but if you skied with Huckstix you would see, this IS how he enters EVERYTHING.
For the record these are all WAY larger than they look. Having the pleasure of skiing with HS, has allowed me to witness some of the most mindblowing feats I have ever seen. So, props to an unsung Squaw hero.
The Fortress at Squaw. My first time dropping this was directly on HS tails.....and it scared the F@#$ out of me.....fun stuff.

[QUOTE=Ski Beaver]Chute on Blackcomb
http://www.biglines.com/photos/blpic19440.jpg
Is the chute that you end up at after following a run designated as a double black, but seems like it should be a blue, then dumps into this chute with the only option being to hike out if you can't do it? There was a rope on skiers left that we had to duck to get to this area if that helps at all. I'm just curious because it looks exactly like the run I went down, but for 2 years I thought it was "couloir extreme". That was definitely a sketchy run that day though, completely tracked out and icy. Maybe 10 people at the top wondering if they should drop in or not when my buddy and I casually (or stupidly) dropped into it. Can anyone clear this up for me because that photo of couloir extreme looks nothing like what we went down?
definitely not cooler extreme, its much much wider and more mellow...
Id bet that just some random little off shoot they found....
Sensisnow
10-28-2005, 02:17 PM
That's what I was thinking. Whatever it was that I went down was neither wide (maybe 10 ft. at most), nor mellow. Large rock walls on either side with pretty steep pitch that widened and mellowed out a bit once you exited the chute.

there is this one really sketchy chute up on cowboy ridge at stevens pass that my bro hit up a couple of times when we were hiking it. it's about 3ft wide and probably about 150-200ft long and about 50 degrees of inclination. I looked and it and I was like  f***, that looks scary, but go me going at the same time:) . Maybe next time I go I will get a pic or something. I would say it's sort of similar to that alta pic quoted above but a little shorter.
