View Full Version : Tracks Game
Just a little thing I made this afternoon. Inspiration was the tracks thread. Have fun, try not to take this piss too much - post pics of nice tracks produced :)

Sweet!
If you push down to pick up a little speed, you can make some really nice GS turns.

Oops, forgot to mention keys :) Left is left, right is right, down increases speed, up slows down.

OH well. So much for the rest of the work day.

I've added a preliminary jump to this one... I doesn't quite work perfectly yet, but you guys can play about with it. When in the air, press Space to x-up.

edg
In preparation for the 'working' week... I've made the graphics slightly better, given the skier BroModels and done better terrain design.
Left & right keys for left and right
When in the air, space makes your skis x-up
using left and right in the air performs a sort of lincoln loop
The far right couloir can be entered around or over the rock, and on the last right turn of the couloir you can jump over the rocks.
Work hard (http://hosting.the-edg.net/edg/bro.swf)
edg
I'm spending far too much time on this... now with glades - if that's you thing - or the version above if you like big clean slopes.
Feeling gladed? (http://hosting.the-edg.net/edg/glades.swf)
edit : I've added a 'dump' button to delete all tracks - as all of the trees and tracks will end up slowing down the game.
edit 2 : made the gameplay a bit better - the skier now skis over his tracks (not under them :D), the rotation when linolning is reduced and trees are less sensitive to being hit.
edg
ok im addicted
this is awesome keep it up
Nuts.
Much like my real-life skiing, I'm stuck in another fucking tree well.
Just starting work on a multiplayer version (i.e. everyone on the same slope from around the world) so don't expect much updates soon... Hopefully will have something working tonight - but pesky work and stuff could put a stop to that.

I'll try and get it done as soon as possible... :) Only problem is that it's much more technical than the current game, and I've never done anything like this before :D I may have been a bit optimistic in my original estimate, but by Thurs at least I reckon (For something where you see everyone else going down the slope, even if they're not exactly leaving tracks quite yet :) ).

You probably don't want to hear this... but due to my slackness in the implementation of the rocks, you can't transfer most of them - sorry! I will fix it just for you though, basom.

First multiplayer beta. I have no real idea how this will come out - but you should at least see other people moving around the slope (If god awfully slowly). I'm just getting the networking dialed, next is the graphical side.
Have a go (http://game.the-edg.net/net.swf). If too many people go on, it'll be AWFULLY slow. The final implementation will have 'rooms', and maybe even usernames :)

Yeah, tons of cliffs, maybe a few new levels. I want one jamie-pierre-is-a-pussy cliff, and lots of stuff to transfer/gap. Maybe jump a whole glade that you can ski through in a different route?
I'm starting working on a level, based on you guy's ideas, keep 'em up and I'll try to keep adding. The new version (with these levels) will have special new modifier, allowing some jumps to be big ass, and others to be little drops (for billy goatin')

Awesome. Class just got way cooler.
Idea - how about changing the acceleration so that it is based on gravity - I would think this would be fairly easy, the skier's angle from straight down would feed into an acceleration equation, the greater the angle, the lower the acceleration.

To give an update, I'm implementing the level Indy has produced (Thanks, it's sweet!), but it's taking a while (as it's quite detailed, and I want it to run as smoothly as possible). After a few plays on what I've implemented so far, this level is going to really excite you gap sluts ;)

Yeah this game is sick. Maybe we can get Owens to label this as the official TGR video game and put it on the main page. Some inprovments that would be cool. If you could choose from a few skiers each one having their typical characteristics (ie, Pierre could huck farther, Nobis can straightline better than anyone) It would be really dope if you could work in some avalanche danger (I'm sure Conway would love that) If you get more levels it would be super dope if you could land the heli on any peak that you want. That way you wouldn't have to traverse. And you could have a cool heli lander game. It would be pretty cool if you could work in some dude filming from the heli. GOOD WORK EDG!

check your ********@mac.com addy.
this game is amazing and sick and it is definately The tgr game
but if you haven't check out The newschoolers game Jibberish (see sig)
it kind of evolved the same way as this one with lots of input from the community and one kickass member who put it all together
sorry for the hijack
i think this game should definately keep evolving, like with real grapics and newer sick lines etc. I don't want to push it farther than edg can deal with, but turning it into a first or 3rd person viewed game (in version 9999.0997) i think is where this is headed
to make the newschoolers comparison again
ns game-jibberish (jibbing)
tgr game-tracks (sick lines w/ a lil (or lot) of huck)--can you imagine this game at the evolved level of jibberish t'would be orgasmic
edg-im hope this didn't come across as me dumping on your game at all. cause im not, i think its amazing and amazzingly addictive and i honestly don't know which game i like more, I'm just making a prohpecy, a goal maybe, for what this game could become
Ive always wanted a big mountain game like this
lax
ooooh oooh i got something else awesome
i don't know if this is more anal (hehe) or cool
i was just playing and noticed that the last run-out turn you take at the end is much more satisfying due to the fact that its thicker...whic got me thinking.
since the name of the game is Tracks, could you make the tracks a function of your speed somehow(?gravity?). They get thicker and bolder near the bottom, but that happens at some arbitrary point. It would be pretty sweet too if the tracks looked different when you turned. In the game it looks like you ski faster when you are at the end of a big carve, so maybe this would just be a result of the above function. (isn't this just acceleration? No, oh ok, g-forces? No idea, ok, um..centrifigal forces..
maybe you could get a smart math/physics major type maggot to help you out with this equation/function deal, my input stops at g=9.8(times)something
sweet two of my longest posts ever, hmm at least theyre sort of skiing related
Hey all,
Optics : got you email, but I can't view it 'cos XP sucks; when I get home... Looking forward to it :)
Lax : Don't worry, that is the direction I'm hoping to go in (Though Version 9999 is probably an appropriate estimation). I'm thinking of adding balance and so forth, first.
On the tracks front, I have them getting thicker as you progress down the slope, but I don't know if Flash's drawing capabilities really pick it up enough. I WOULD like to have a curve going out from the track dependent on the height and the speed, so if anyone can work that out...

I think what would make the game kick ass is maybe make it like 4-5 times longer but the same size so when you get to the bottom it just starts scrolling down. And doing that you could have way more different kinds of cliffs and what not. and the different skiers with different abilities sounds cool too. just my input, i cant draw anything tho. kick ass game as it is.

Just about to start the multiple 'character' implementation, and just want your thoughts...
Who should I have? And what should their qualities be? What do they look like normally (Colours, mainly)
Should I implement some sort of 'balance'? (speed and sharp turns make you more unstable and can make you fall)
What tricks would you like me to include? (Please include pictures :) )

But as for tricks, a simple back or front flip would be a good start.

sounds good....
The balance thing might be cool, but not if it's too hard to keep the skier from falling over.
Seth - should be good at launching off cliffs and just generally a smooth skier. Should probably be wearing bright colors? (orange and red)
Nobis - fast and accurate. Wearing whatever.
Hugo - should be difficult for him to fall/crash.
Thats all I got for now...
HotTate
10-11-2004, 03:20 PM
We should have TGR skiers if its going to be the TGR video game. Nobis skis fast and straight. Will Burks is the same, but much like Hugo, stomps regularly. Pierre, fast can go fartheroff cliffs than anyone, but with a small stomp rating. Sage, fast, goes big, but make it so he can spin faster (and sage doesn't really like to go inverted)
You make some handy points in your post, Tate. I've been considering what variables should be changed to individualize each skier. Hadn't thought of the rotation, but that's a good point. Speed, turning radius, stompability (No, that's not a real word) and huck distance (This isn't all that realistic, but would help disinguish the marginally mentally challenged from the pierre-eque nutjobs) were some I was thinking of, and rotation is a good one to include. If I do put in the balance system, then speed and stability will factor (Straightline guys can accelerate and be stable at much higher speeds, but will be less stable in short, sharp turns), and likewise the big huckers will remain stable in the air for longer than the clean, smooth line guys (Burks being a bit of both). Suggest anything else you think will improve this move towards realism. I'm also working (slowly) towards a scrolling mechanism, but it's pretty tough.

Can we get some sort of points system? And here was my other idea in the realm of scrolling movement. What if you were to have a small picture (polaroid style) of the mountain in the upper corner as a key. Then you actually have to line up your jumps in the scrolling window you're skiing in. It would be pretty cool if it was possible to make some of the open bowls prone to avalanches.

how hard is it to turn a photo into the game environment? like, if we took a picture:

could we make that the game? that'd be cool, you could take your local place and play the areas you suck at in real life.

It's possible, but pretty tough... The problem is that with so many small details, you would need boat loads of collision detection blocks, and that could slow down the game somewhat. Having said that, I'm not one for not trying... Maybe this afternoon I'll see what I can do with photos...

I was just thinking that a points system would allow competition. Against your friends and against your own high score. style points dont really matter. mainly because everyone is doing the same mute grab lincoln anyways. Award points on how many airs are hit, distance, rotations (w/grab gets more points, you could also integrate style points into how long you hold the grab for. It seems like you can get more rotations in if you're not grabbing, so that's already integrated) and how fast you can make it to the finish.

just a thought: does the game have to see what you see? why not make a level that fairly closely resembles an image, then overlay the image for the user's benefit much the way a website that wants you to click on your state uses simple geometric shapes for the areas but overlays a real map. this should take the load off the computer and fancy collision detection.
i dont want apoints system, woudl kind of ruin it

That's essentially the way it's done at the moment - the shapes in the background are just shapes, but there are little invisible 'sentries' which check for collision (As flash has a ridiculous built in system in which you can have complex shapes, but the collision detection is performed on a rectangular bounding box)
Don't know if this is really a points sort of game... :-\ I'm not really sure how they would be allocated anyway (I think the idea of many games of giving points for quantity [e.g. the more you spin the better] over actually visually impressive tricks [sometimes a nice floaty safety grab is better than a corked 1080 mute misty backflip with lemon...]), but maybe...
Anyway, will work on the pictures and also some sort of scrolling (using which you could have a hi-res picture in which you would be 'zoomed' so you could roam about). Also click-to-drop off (You click on a point [when you can drop off] and that's where you start).
Not 'till Thursday I think, though, as I'm going wakeboarding tomorrow afternoon (Total n00b... dunno how well it'll pan out) and will probably have some work to do. But I'll try!

My vote's for no points, no balance, no grabs.
Keep it simple - it's just a flash game. All this PS2-sounding crap is not very realistic to expect, IMHO.
It would be cool, and relatively easy (?), to make dual-axis spins, and to build in speed modifiers associated with steepness.
Example - an area that bottlenecks between two cliffs should speed you up.
It's also be cool if you could land switch (all the cool kids are doing it), and if you could smear a turn on a spine ala Mcschlonk circa focused. Those seem do-able program-wise.

EDG, I just got back home after a week or so in the mountains. I will get working on some new levels and graphics for this game, nice work thus far.
I ws in Teton Village for a few and stopped by the TGR office, Nice to meet the guys who were around, Tate, todd, Schroder, etc., Anyway I walk in and Todd take me on a tour of the place, on we go into the editing room, and what do I see, this game in all of its glory on the monster theatre display monitors used for editing. I got some great ideas from the guys for graphics as well as most of the ideas that have been mentioned here.
As far as photos go, I will integrate any photos that you want into a vector format to make the game easier to put into place with photos.

Hey edg: switch landings? That could be a Pep/CR character or something... That would involve variable spins (holding down the arrow longer makes you spin longer), which I'm not sure is what was agreed on, but I think that would be very cool.

or the looker's left wall of the cooly?
I've been trying that line ever since you posted it and was beginning to give up on it
edit: me thinks it's the rock
i've tried the straightline.
i've tried the rock in the middle to gain speed
i've tried the top of the left rock band
i keep trying to come in over the looker's left rock band so you land right above take off.

This game is way better on my computer here at work. There are guys with what sound like giant dental drills drilling into our walls here at work so I figure what a great time to give this a shot.

It goes OK :) Working on a new Indy map, but I think we're going to get a few done before the release (Though that may change). I was planning to work on it quite a bit this week (on holiday) but then I got a job. So now I spend my days filing, but by the end of the week I will have Ł150 towards some lovely on-sale pocket rockets! (Or maybe save up for some Bros next season) :)

Linky no worky for me today.
Sorry for long time no update...
Beta of Indy's latest 'map', have fun :-)

The newest feature really is a click-and-go; click where you want to drop off and off you go.
The would look sick on a really big screen - at 100% this is massive (though it should scale to the browser window) :D

The new level is cooool... What are the text boxes in the lower left? Glades? Park? Huck Fest? Are those soon-to-be links to levels (or are they levels, and my comp just doesn't want to accept them as links?)
And one question: a couple times I have crashed midway down the level (damned trees) and when I click drop off it drops me to the side of where I crashed with a straightline above me... I have to refresh the browser to correct this. Something you might want to look at, edg... Not a big deal, but something to think about.
And why doesn't my click and go work? Shouldn't I be able to click where I want to be and then drop off? Or how exactly is that supposed to work... Guidance would be appreciated. All things considered, I HEART TRACKS GAME!
Thanks edg for captivating us!
I'm afraid it's a bit buggy... But, I shall strive to reslove those bug tonight!
Yeah, the idea is to have each of those as a seperate level you can link too. The avalanche is kinda fun, eh? You can straightline out of it, but it's hard (or should be).
Is anyone having speed troubles? I think some computers are having trouble with the big size (this one at school is, for example)
Have fun,

Edg, it runs fine for me. I wish I had more time right now to do the other levels. Maybe soon. Lets get this one fixed of any bugs and then roll with some new levels like we talked about. I have some ideas.

I second the slowness. Remarkably slow, actually, after only 2 or 3 runs.
And where's the avi?
INDY GS

You can experience the avi just below the cornice on the left of the screen. You have to ski into the right area, so it comes unexpectedly.
Wear your snorkel. ;)
I'm working on the speed issue; don't know quite how I can help it - but I shall try! :D
The other interface bug are also being sorted :-)
edg
Someone suggested panning the map behind, and I think that SHOULD help with the speed. However, I am rewriting the 'engine' to try and optimize it. I will release a more bug free version of the full screen :-)

Movin' on up...
Hey edg: I still can't get the links to work for the huck fest, park, etc. Have you worked that out, and my browser just sucks? Err what's the dealio on that, yo?
The game still rocks. And for more flash game fun: Mountain biking--do not play if you have important stuff to do (http://www.fjallbrynt.nu/mountainclimber/game.asp) (just click the buttons to advance through the game, and use the arrows to move).
Ah werd upppp.
