First Avalanche Fatality of the Season Reported in Idaho, North America

A snow biker was killed in an avalanche northwest of Cascade, Idaho, on Sunday, according to a preliminary report from the Payette Avalanche Center (PAC)

Two snow bikers triggered the avalanche just outside PAC’s forecast area. "The avalanche was reported to be relatively small, but the rider was carried down into a terrain trap and buried deeply," according to the PAC. The rider was located with an avalanche transceiver and excavated, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

The avalanche occurred in northwest of Cascade, Idaho.

Witnesses reported heavy wind-loaded slopes and described the slab breaking as the bikers attempted to ride back up. The incident occurred around 2 p.m.
