Dramatic Video Shows Popular Climbing Spire Collapse After Sawtooth Earthquake

On the evening of August 7, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck in Idaho’s Sawtooth mountains, causing a large landslide and the collapse of part of Baron Spire, a popular climbing route in the range. The zone, nicknamed “Old Smoothie” was heavily damaged by the rockfall, though it remains unclear which climbing routes were affected. The landslide was caught on video by a group of climbers on the far side of the lake, who had just descended through the gully the rockslide rips through.
