DRAMATIC UPSET: Keystone Zips Past A-Basin in the Race for First Chair
Popular Stories
The annual, unofficial race for the first ski resort to open in North America always brings the hype, and this year, the drama hit a whole new level. For a short time, it seemed Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin) would take the crown after announcing a Sunday morning debut. However, in a surprising turn of events that had skiers scrambling, Keystone Resort fired a shot across the bow, announcing a spontaneous opening just 90 minutes before lifts started turning.
The Lightning-Fast Announcement
The action unfolded on social media. After a week of playful teasing from both resorts, A-Basin finally announced an 8:30 AM start for Sunday. The ski world settled in, but Keystone was not done. Shortly after A-Basin's announcement, Keystone dropped the news at around 1:30 PM: they were opening that very day, at 3:00 PM!
Keystone, utilizing its extensive snowmaking setup, was able to stage an unprecedented afternoon opening, allowing skiers and riders to make their first turns under the setting sun and even Keystone’s signature night lights.
A Rivalry for the Ages
For context, Keystone’s move mirrors a classic play A-Basin pulled in 2019. In that year, A-Basin surprised Keystone with an early opening to snatch the title. It’s a friendly but fierce competition that’s all about bragging rights and the pure stoke of winter's arrival.
A-Basin's President and COO, Alan Henceroth, graciously congratulated Keystone on their victory. He conceded that when you make a move like that, you have to expect it to come back around.

The Thrill of Early Season Turns
The die-hards lined up at the gondola hours before the announcement, just in case. They ended up making first-chair at both mountains over the course of the weekend. The unexpected opening meant those first laps were a celebration, complete with two miles of terrain on Schoolmarm and Silver Spoon, and even a hike-to terrain park.
With the race now settled, the season is officially underway. Both resorts are continuing to make snow whenever conditions allow. Keystone will be open daily, followed closely by A-Basin's Sunday debut. It’s time to wax the skis and boards and drop in for what is sure to be another epic winter.
