On February 14th, 2016, Dr. Samuel Caruthers assaulted 12-year-old Jacob Azamoun at Mountain Creek Resort, New Jersey using his hands and ski poles. The altercation occurred after Caruthers saw the young man crash into his 10-year-old son and, according to him, "defended [his son] from getting hit another time." Exactly how or why Caruthers expected his son to be struck again is unclear. After a protracted, three-year legal battle, Caruthers has finally been sentenced.

Somewhat bizarrely, Caruthers has been sentenced to spend February 14th, 2020, 2021, and 2022 in jail, for a total of 72 hours of incarceration. In addition, he will need to complete an anger management course, undergo personality and psychological assessments, do 200 hours of community service, and pay court fines and fees.
This isn't the first time Caruthers has been in legal jeopardy. He was put on probation after allegedly assaulting a man in Maryland in 2010, and had an incident with a protester in 2013,
according to the New Jersey Herald.
