Dirtbag Climbing Legend Fred Beckey Passes Away at 94

Fred Beckey, a legendary climber, author, and adventurer credited with more first ascents than any other American climber passed away Monday. He was 94, and died from natural causes in his Seattle home.

Beckey was born in Germany, immigrating to the U.S. at a young age with his parents, and settling in Seattle. There, he honed his skills and developed an eternal passion for climbing, dedicating his life to the vertical world, and embracing the dirtbag ethos to the absolute fullest.

He rose to fame with his second ascent of the remote and difficult Mount Waddington in BC’s Coast Range, cementing his legacy with the groundbreaking ascent. Throughout his life, he continued climbing bold routes, including several in the iconic guidebook 50 Classic Climbs of North America.
