China and Nepal Close Access to Mt. Everest Over COVID-19 Concerns

Everest expedition operators based out of China and Nepal have been informed by government officials that all spring 2020 climbing expeditions have been cancelled over COVID-19 concerns. According to Alpenglow Expeditions, a major operator, the main risk is an outbreak at base camps, far from advanced medical facilities and populated by well-traveled climbers.

In addition, Nepal has put all tourist visas on hold between March 14th and April 30th, according to the Kathmandu Times, essentially closing the country's borders to visitors for the next six weeks. This will mean a major hit to the country's tourism-based economy, which draws millions of dollars from permits and other mountaineering-related commerce.
