The Megavalanche, perhaps the wildest mountain bike race ever, went down this past weekend in Alp d’Huez, France. It involves a mass start at the top of a glacier, with riders jockeying for position on the snow before hitting singletrack for another mile of descending to the valley floor.

After qualifying rounds up high, race organizers were forced to cancel the glacier section due to a storm on the peak. Instead, riders started just below the snow and raced down the sloppy dirt that developed after the rainstorm. The start, as expected, turned into absolute carnage as racers fought for the pole position heading into the singletrack. From there, it was every man and woman for themselves all the way to town.
