Bucket List This: Slacklining a Hawaiian Jungle

Alex Mason makes slacklining look easy. But that’s probably the least fitting adjective for what's basically the birth child of gymnastics and tightrope walking.

Mason (aka “The Machine,” a nickname that embarrasses him, but that he's earned because he never fails to land tricks, and stays on the line for what seems like forever) has been labelled an athlete to watch, and this short video shot above a waterfall in the botanical gardens of Hilo, Hawaii proves just why.

The dude won his first world championship the day after he turned 16 three years ago, and now spends his days taking on increasingly difficult maneuvers. The sport’s on the up, and he’s right there with it.

I scratch my head contemplating doing backflips and 360s on a two-inch wide strap hovering above the ground (or, more specifically, slippery rocks, and rocks aren’t soft). For Mason, however, it’s all a walk in the park, and in typical teenager fashion, his adidas sneakers are caked in mud. The laces are practically undone.

It's videos like these that deepen our appreciation for athletes; they remind us that nothing’s impossible. Slacklining in a tropical jungle's now on my bucket list...just maybe take out the slacklining.
