Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the Colorado backcountry between Silverton and Ophir, following an avalanche accident yesterday. According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, a group of backcountry skiers triggered a large avalanche while traveling in an area locally known as The Nose. Four people were caught, carried, and fully buried in the debris. The group recovered one person with minor injuries. Three others are still missing. The avalanche released on a northeast-facing slope near treeline at 11,500 feet. Avalanche danger was rated as Considerable for the San Juans on Monday, following a winter storm that deposited new snow on a historically unstable snowpack. This is a developing story.
