BCA Backcountry Basics Step #5: Get Out of Harm’s Way

In this video BCA explains how to safely stay out of harm's way while traveling in the backcountry. When it comes down to it the only way to stay 100% safe is stay at home on the couch, but there are ways you can mitigate risk and plan ahead. One is to keep both verbal and visual communication with people in your group while traveling. Group management like skiing one at a time can be crucial to maintaining group safety.

Line choice and management is also paramount, don't ski on an unsupported slope above a large amounts of exposure, as an avalanche could sweep you over this. Terrain traps can prove deadly, even a small avalanche could cause injury or death if funneled through the right trap. Staying safe in the backcountry really comes down to being prepared and knowledgeable for what you might face out there.
