Christine Smith and Chris Brookes are used to snowy winters and falling rock hazards; after all, they live at the base of a snowy cliff in St. Johns, Newfoundland. Chris is even convinced that a falling rock is someday going to be the way the universe sends him on his way. Luckily, it is still not his time. Instead of rocks, the cliff recently sent down a large avalanche.
Christine was making tea when she heard a loud noise next door, alarmingly near their adjacent rental house. As it turns out, a large avalanche came shooting down the cliff, blasted through a snow fence, exploded a window of the rental house out of its frame, and sent a mountain of snow into the living room. With the fire department's help, Chris, Christine, and their tenant were able to avoid any permanent damage or collapse from the weight of the snow.

The tenant is currently staying down the street away from the cliff, avoiding any further hazard. Christine and Chris, however, will remain tucked beneath the overhanging and unpredictable band of rocks, as they have for more than 35 years. As Chris says, "the charm of (the town) is it’s underneath a cliff.” It seems the charm outweighs the hazard, and hopefully the hazard is now effectively abated after the slide.
