

At Least 33 Dead After Successive Avalanches in Turkey

Tragic news out of eastern Turkey this morning, as news sources are reporting that at least 33 have been killed, and dozens more trapped by a series of avalanches near the city of Van. The initial avalanche hit a snowplow and minibus, knocking the vehicles off the road and burying them to a large extent. Rescue teams were sent to rescue the vehicle's occupants, and were making good progress when the second avalanche struck.

The second avalanche killed at least 33, and injured over 50 more. As of press time, efforts to rescue the initial victims and rescue teams are ongoing. Süleyman Soylu, the Turkish Minister of the Interior said that a total of 153 search and rescue personnel, 28 ambulances and 17 rescue vehicles have been sent to the region to offer assistance, and that 30 people have been rescued so far.
