633 Divers, 3,200 pounds of Trash and a New World Record
Popular Stories
Last Saturday, hundreds of divers took to the water at Deerfield Beach in Florida to set the new Guinness World Record for the largest group underwater cleanup. As part of an annual cleanup organized by the Dixie Divers and Deerfield Beach Women's Club, the event brought 633 divers from across the world, including Europe and South America, to pick through the ocean floor off of Broward County, Florida.
For those who took part, the real victory comes in the form of over 1,600 pounds of trash that was pulled from the ocean, with participants reportedly telling CNN that the garbage ranged from “everything from a boat ladder to a barbell.” The trash will be organized and recycled, so that none will find its way back into the ocean.
