Sadly, accidents like this are far too common in the skiing world, even among experienced riders. It is extremely important to stay inside the resort bounds unless you are equipped with proper gear and know-how, and always go into the backcountry with a buddy. Even in bounds, riders have to stay vigilant-- while ski patrollers everywhere work hard to trigger preemptive slides and keep the area safe, skiing carries inherent risks that only riders can protect themselves from.
