Three people have sadly passed away this weekend in two separate incidents in Colorado: two people in an avalanche and one as the result of a fall. The two avalanche fatalities bring the season total up to 16 in the state.

The two victims were riding motorized snowbikes with a friend when all three were caught in a large avalanche. The third person was able to dig themselves out of the debris near the top but the other two were carried to the bottom of the slide path and not recovered until the next day. A report issued by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center stated that the avalanche was 650 feet wide and 120 feet long and propagated five feet down to a weak layer near the ground.

The other fatality occurred when an 83-year-old Colorado native accidentally skied off the deck of Aspen Snowmass' 22-foot tall superpipe. He was wearing a helmet and was reportedly skiing alone. Ski patrol followed trauma protocol and transferred him to St. Anthony Hospital in Denver where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Our condolences to everyone affected by these recent tragedies.
