2018 Editor’s Picks: News

Boy, oh boy, has it ever been a year in news.  Not a whole lot of good stuff, but we've done our best to mix in some funny stuff with the ubiquitous bad news which seems to be the norm.

1: Great White Off Nauset Beach

I don't like sharks.  Call me anthropocentric, but ever since I watched Jaws in a high school film class I can't get them out of my head.  This video didn't help one bit.

2: Inbounds Slide at Squaw

What is up with all of these inbounds slides?  I've started wearing my beacon whenever I'm skiing because it seems like the snowpack in recent years has been actively trying to lull people into a false sense of complacency and then eat them.

3: Liz Swaney's Halfpipe Run

A true skiing anti-hero was born at the Olympics this year: Liz Swaney.  Qualifying through a loophole, she made a mockery of the discipline and then attempted to justify it by saying "I hope this can be a platform to inspire others."  I'm not inspired, Liz.

4: Best Yellowstone Supervolcano Video Yet

I feel like every few years there's a new scary report about tectonic activity in Yellowstone, but this one takes the cake.  Count on Russian propaganda to cook up some BS about the apparently-impending volcano-apocalypse.

5: Massive Avalanche Causes BC Highway Closure

Thank goodness that Canadian authorities know how to handle avalanche danger near roadways, because this is one serious controlled-avalanche.  I wonder how long it took to clear all of that snow off the highway.
