1930s Climbing: ‘Up to their Adams Apple in Dangerous Situations’

Throwing it back to 1938, this rock climbing clip is almost worth watching for the narrating alone. Although the technique and gear used then will likely make you grateful for modern technology as well.

The clip, "Three on a Rope" features members of the Sierra Club near Mt Baldy. Shout out to the badass lady, rocking shorts and high socks in the 30s.

The climbers are all using "rubber soled non-skid sneakers" and wearing street clothes with buttons and belts. And the middle man uses a butterfly knot, to "prevent sudden and violent strangulation of the diaphragm."

Tune in for:

"This guy is up to his adams apple in hazardous situations."

"In a spot like this only one man climbs at a time, the other two act as safety men in case, just how safe the safety men are seems rather problematic from where I sit."

"These guys can stick to a cliff like taffy to an upper plate."

"Anyway, Hermon want's to climb rocks, so let him climb rocks."
