14-Year-Old Girl Killed By Rockfall In Glacier National Park
A 14-year-old girl was killed and four others injured when rockfall struck a family’s car in Glacier National Park on Monday night. The Utah family of five was driving near the East Tunnel on the Going-To-The-Sun road when a substantial amount of rock landed on the roof of their car. The impact critically injured the young girl, and her unstable condition prevented her from being airlifted. Flight paramedics opted to rush her by ground to a nearby hospital in Kalispell, Montana, but she tragically died en-route. The girl’s parents were in stable condition, but suffered significant bruising from the rocks, and were transported to a nearby hospital alongside their two other children, who suffered minor injuries.
The Going-To-The-Sun road was temporarily closed Monday night while crews cleared debris from the road and a tow truck removed the wrecked car. The incident is the first case of fatal rockfall on the Going-To-The-Sun road in more than 23 years.
